They are going to have some 4 or 5 solemn professions in August, I've heard. One of them is from our diocese and we are very happy for her and all.

How wonderful!

On a very practical level, I'd be a terrible cistercian, I couldn't keep my brown habit presentable, let alone a white one!

This is one of the main reasons why the reform of the Cistercians (Order of Cistercians of Strict Observance, aka Trappists) use a black scapular.

(Okay, probably not. I made that up. But it SHOULD be true, shouldn't it?)

Krissy, you were so convincing that I completely believe it and hereby proclaim it to be the true. hahaha

I agree, this should be true! According to the website they get the black scapular at first vows, so maybe that first years noviciate is to fiIter out the messy ones?

edit: how on earth does it make sense to change 'fiIter' to fiddler???

Amazing pictures! One novice does not look so young, while a couple of the postulants look very young. Amazing and wonderful! The picture of the novice on their website I have seen a few times on the net - she is beautiful and a picture holiness! Quite a demanding horarium they have too. There is something about the novice on the far right in the second picture that really appeals to me - a classic 'nun type' to take a backward step into my stereotypes.

God bless - Barb

I was trying to match them up and I wonder if the novice you mentioned is the postulant on the rt in the first photo? She does have a beautiful glow about her!

The postulants in the first photo appear to be the first on the left (back row) and the last on the right (middle row) of the second photo. :) And the postulant in the back, first photo, looks like the third (back row) in the second photo.

I think you got it- the novice on the far right in the second picture is the postulant on the right in the first picture. I was drawn to her almost immediately, there is something classically nun like about her to me. I do hope she keeps her whites white in her noviciate year or years! :)

There's a short but nice slide show about them from You Tube:

Their singing is nice, too!

Oh, that is just like the Trappistines then. Or at least just like the Trappistines close to my house. I suppose different abbeys may vary.

So much for my theory. Although as a scapular was a work apron, the idea of a white one seems kind of nuts if you ask me, which admittedly nobody did. :P Though I guess if your "work" as a novice is largely prayer and study, that is less messy. ;)

I like that postulants --> novices --> junior professed --> solemn professed all look distinct. Postulants wear lay clothes (for some communities this is a "uniform" and for some it is not). Novices wear all white (and pray for grace to avoid stains). Add a black scapular at first vows (but keep the white veil). The black veil comes at perpetual/solemn vows. So there is a steady progression, which seems to me to be excellent symbolism.
