Confirmation Saints

I know there were topics like this before, but with confirmation happening recently, it got me thinking about mine and how I chose my saint.

What was your confirmation saint's name and do you have a devotion to them today? Would you choose the same saint if you were getting confirmed today? If not, who would you choose?

When I was confirmed back in April 1998, I chose St. Anne, mother of Our Lady. The reason I chose her is because her feast day (along with St. Joachim, her husband) is celebrated on my birthday. I didn't care a lick about learning about saints back then, so I chose the easy way. Unfortunately, not much is known about her, even if her name is correct, so I don't have much of a devotion to her.

If I were being confirmed today, I'd probably choose a different saint. For the past few years, I've been really drawn to St. Elizabeth of the Visitation. I've always liked her since learning about her. I'd want Elizabeth as my confirmation name.

I chose St. Francis De Sales, for a number of reasons. One, he is was the Bishop of Geneva, Switzerland (where i was born) and was amesome at that job. Two, he's the patron saint of writers and at the time I wanted to be a writer.

I don't really have a devotion to him, although i'm planning on reading a number of his writings when i get time. I would say that I would probably do much more research this time around, but would probably still pick St. Francis.

I chose St. Maria Faustina. At the time, I did not have a strong devotion to her, but I remember liking her when I was younger and praying the Chaplet. Now, I do have a very close devotion to her, love her like a bestie, and would definitely pick her as my saint today :)

Vincent Vega

St. Vincent de Paul. I converted due (in large part) to my work and the sisters at a Daughters of Charity run hospital bearing his name. My personal charism is very similar to his and if I were to choose again, I would pick him in a heartbeat. I've always felt like we sort of clicked. Plus the Vincentian family is amesome. (You know the Miraculous Medal? You can thank us for that.)

Saint Joseph was my choice back when I was confirmed, his intercession stills helps me today. Thank God for him too.

When it came to my patron saint I knew that it was already going to be a soldier saint. Unfortunately I knew of only two at the time, Saint Michael and Joan of Arch. Well as it slowly grew closer to a confirmation time I still had not decided when one day out of the blue I'm surfing the web and out of a typo pops Saint Martin de Tours, patron saint of France. So I look him over and I'm like THIS CAN'T BE COINCIDENCE! Feel in love with this saint immediately, and I'm pretty sure this typo and stuff was no accident. So pretty much I'm about 99.9999% sure that my patron saint chose me instead of the other way around.
As for choosing another saint, no, I don't think I would ever be able to. Like I said, I didn't really choose, I was chosen. :smile2:

St. Maria Goretti

Actually, I just chose her because my mom wanted me to... then when I was a senior in high school, I found out my grandfather had a relic of hers. Ever since then, I wouldn't say I have a "devotion", but she is a huge part of my life. I really would like to take a pilgrimage to where she lived in Italy. Now, I want to start the Goretti group at my parish. :)

things work out in mysterious ways, don't they?

St Cecilia here. I chose her because I love music, and music has always been a big part of my prayer and worship. It means enough to me that when I changed my name legally 18mths ago I had it as my 2nd name, so yes I would probably keep it, possibly now with the martyr aspect meaning more than it did at the time.

I chose my confirmation names recently, in fact... and I'll be honest and say they chose me, rather than the other around. Catherine of Siena and St Theresa of Avila weren't my first choices (I was going with one of either Julianna, Francesca, Clare or Colette) but they made themselves known... and since I'm a bit intimidated by both of them, I didn't dare say no to them, either!

Since this was just at Easter past, it's too soon to say whether I regret it or not. I suspect shan't. Both saints have something to teach me - about passion, and determination, and (dare I say it) about obstinacy as well. Neither woman was afraid to say what they thought, and I could do with a bit of that, as well.

Saint Margaret of Scotland.
Their aren't many prayers for her because she is not a well known saind.

I would choose the same saint. When I was being confirmed I had Saint Gianna Bretta Molla in mind, but out of nowhere I found Margaret, and I really think I am blessed to have such a patroness!

Sometimes I feel really bad that I don't have much of a devotion to St. Anne. There aren't very many prayers to her either. Many sources claim that her name--Anne--is not even 100% known. I love learning about the saints and it's too bad that the Blessed Virgin's parents aren't better known. Not many records are around from then. :(

Same thing happened with me. I have a slightly obscure saint- St. Dominic Savio. And he literally stalked me for three days. (Popped up on EWTN, stumbled across him on the internet, and then some one mentioned him to me).

St. Margaret is one of my ancestors. I think about her alot. She hadn't planned to marry, wanted to be a nun. She married a rough man, and had to civilize him. It reminds me of myself. I wish I had the resources she did to open hospitals and monasteries.

My confirmation saint was Raphael. My Godmother's name was Raphaela, and she was also my confirmation sponsor. The bishop had a funny smirk on his face when he was handed the slip of paper that had my confirmation name on it. I found out later the R in John R. Quinn was for Raphael.

Saint Maximilian Kolbe. He also kinda stalked me over the course of a few days; he popped up on EWTN, I learned that MIkolbe's name was a reference to him, Nihil Obstat's avatar was of him, I got to hear someone's story of their mom treating a former Auschwitz prisoner who was there when he sacrificed himself for Franciszek Gajowniczek, and then my ex informed me that seveteen phatmassers did a novena to him for me to convert to Catholicism. (I still don't know who you all are, but thanks!)

I really couldn't think of a better confirmation saint than someone who met impossible odds at every turn, and kept the faith and persevered. Then to give oneself for a man he didn't even know, it definitely struck home too. I still have a devotion to him today, though I need to pray more. I would definitely choose him again.

St. Rose of Viterbo was my Confirmation Saint - a beautiful Saint whom I love, but I don't really have a strong devotion to her. I probably should!

Today I would have chosen a different Saint - either St. Therese, or St. Faustina, or St. Clare. Maybe even some others - I love the Saints!
