This Deacon doesn't like it.

Our old pastor allowed it. We live on a military base and share our chapel with the protestants and I think they use it A LOT. My current pastor completely nipped that in the bud. The only time he pulls it out is if he has some video clip he wants to show us as part of his homily (which isn't often). There are still a few things I wish he'd change, but I am grateful he has put a bunch of other stuff to right.

In other words, prayers and songs don't need to be projected on a jumbo screen. It's completely unnecessary. We have books for that and there are plenty enough to go around. If people want to sing along they can grab a missalette. Song names and numbers are pretty much always posted somewhere or announced before they begin.

I think it can be useful. It depends on the building - my parish church is like walking into a migraine and theres not an inch of plain wall - but if there is a suitable plain wall then it can be fine. It means you don't need to be juggling books about, or limited to one hymn book. Its far cheaper in the long run to use the screen than but however many hundred new hymn books. It does not have to exclude those with vision problems either as there could be a handful of books for those who need them.

It would also be far cheaper to hold mass in a prefab steel warehouse (Call the General!), but luckily, we don't base honoring our God on which option is least expensive. ;)

No, but its a reality that many parishes are not rolling in money. I believe the music does more to honour and glorify God than either paper or an OHP. If the OHP makes it easier to have music, then I'm all for it.

it's not necessary...

we should all be like the Polish, they know all their hymns by heart...no missals, music issues necessary....

C'mon, if we didn't have the hymnal how would we learn the lyrics to the latest Haugen abomination???

Right. If parishes can't afford hymnals, then sing the same ones every week so people can memorize them. The projection screen is a distraction and takes away from the sacrifice of the mass IMHO.

Besides, projectors are so 1990's. Why not just go ahead and put a 70 inch HD monitor in front of the altar?

I heard of an abuse Mass where the priest had a laptop on the altar and encouraged people to bring their laptops to Mass. I hope it is an urban legend. It's a pretty laughable idea. I can't imagine it's true therefore I just lol at the idea.

See, now this I don't see as a bad thing. Obviously it's not valid in any way, but I think (if it was done 'right'), this could be a great tool for evangelization on the internet. It might pique just enough curiosity to get people who had never had exposure to Catholicism or Christianity out to a real parish some Sunday.
