Gym Memberships

I'm looking into getting a gym membership, if I can find one for a decent monthly price.

What's an average price?

The one that is just a minute down the road is a ghastly $60/month, plus a $150 start up fee. I'm thinking this is crazy high. Even though it'd be awfully convenient.

The place I'm looking at is $30/month, with no start up fee. And they offer open gym volleyball and basketball ;). It's further away... but definitely cheaper.

Is that a fair price?

If you are low income, you can get a scholarship for the YMCA. Sometimes they will pay all, sometimes they will pay half or more, and sometimes you can trade volunteer hours for the fees.

I don't know what type of area you live in, and i don't know much about gym memberships, but a gym near me was offering a promo deal at $10 a month no contract, so i bet there is a better deal somewhere (maybe). Hope that helps a bit.

Living in the Great Northwest doesn't allow for a whole lot of "outdoor" exercise ;) At least 10 months out of the year.

I'm looking for a place that has fitness (cardio and weight lifting) as well as a gym for pick-up or even structured sports. Which I suppose brings the price up a bit.

haha that's true. I'd check out a YMCA if you have one nearby. It could be a little costly, but they offer great programs and equipment :)

Around here, you can easily find one for $20 month. However with the economic downturn, people are cancelling their memberships left and right (I did too). You can likely negotiate a better rate. Tour a couple gyms and find 1 or 2 you like. When you talk with the finance/membership peeps let them know you really like their gym and would love to join, but the fee is just too high. I betcha 30 tacos, so very tasty and good for you, they will drop the price for you....

Ditto the Y. In most places their rates are based in income. They can be very reasonable. Definitely worth a look.

Those monthly costs down sound a bit high. I pay $20/month. The biggest problem that most of us run into with gym memberships is that we pay for them -- then we never go and use the gym......

I finally joined a gym around the corner from where I work. And I've gotten more use out of it than any other gym I've ever belonged to -- because it is so convenient. I find that it's better if the gym is close to where I work rather than where I live because if I go home rather than going to the gym after work I lose my resolve to go and workout.

So if you can find a gym close to where you work, then that is what I would recommend.

Maybe you should try something like Crossfit. It's free, and you (usually) don't need gym EQ at all. Did it while deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom and it was pretty amesome.

Either that or sometimes you can get on someone else's membership. I was on a friends 24 Hour fitness membership for a while and it was around $28 a month and that was about a year ago.

We used to pay $50 for a couple's membership at the YMCA. That was actually more expensive than most places, but they had a pool, which most other places did not.
