As the fiance said to his future father-in-law on My Big Fat Greek Wedding:

coagulated milk Toast Anesti.

P.S. The father in law answered in Greek, with subtitles...

There are lots of obstacles to our own salvation and the unity of the Churches... some people may see some as more important than others as they are led by the Spirit to see them as such - or as their learning, culture, and experience teaches them. I really just wanted Debra to know that her question was valid and insightful, but it looks like she actually thought something else and so what I wrote is mostly off-topic

Amen :)

there is no obstacle to my salvation. it is assured by my faith in the sacrifice
of Jesus on the Cross.

I bit my tongue and decided not to reference Trent, but all I'll say is that some people could interpret this as supporting sola fide.

Yes, I too am trying to think of a gentle way to refute that statement.

I don't know what solo fide is. Like I said before I received nothing when I became a Catholic. But Jesus
is my Savior, plain and simple. He has given me eternal life. What is so difficult about that?

Sola fide is a heresy that says one is saved by faith alone.

I'm so glad that you believe that Jesus is your Savior and that you trust in Him for your salvation. That is something Catholics and Protestants can rejoice in together. When Jesus ascended into heaven though He did not leave us alone. He gave us the Church to fortify the weapons against evil so Christians may stand together and live holy lives through the grace of the Sacraments. Being a Christian is all about being part of a larger family. When we wander away from that family the waves of sin and despair can more easily overcome us. Jesus founded only one Church, one holy, catholic, apostolic Church against which the gates of hell shall never prevail. Being a Christian is more than just believing in Jesus. It is about running a race towards the Beatific Vision together, and part of that race is Orthodoxy - being willing to not only believe in Jesus, but all that he taught us about Himself, and about us. When we believe things that are not true we sin against him, we effectively say, I do not love you enough even to believe those things that are difficult.

I find it so sad, though, that people are so obsessed with rules. When Christ asked Peter to 'feed his sheep' he did not ask if he would obsessively dot the i and cross the t's, he asked 'Do you love me?'. I know we do need guidelines, and I know that there are truths that we cannot deny, but I can't help but be reminded of the Pharasees sometimes.

The pharasees knew the Law but forgot to love, forgot to be kind, forgot to be humane. They judged others based on externals. None of us can see into anothers soul, none of us can truely know anothers relationship with God. I firmly believe that, when I come face to face with Him on judgement day, the fact that I have participated in non-Catholic worship won't be his first question to me, it will be 'Do you love me'.

No one has the right to criticise anyone else's beliefs, and it saddens me to see it so often.

There is but one universal Church of the faithful, outside which no one at all is saved.

I have one huge problem with this. The Church does not teach properly anymore. If I want
to be spiritually fed it will be through Jesus and Mary teaching me not from going to Mass.
I will get back to Mass as soon as I can. It's been difficult to stay afloat and be what Jesus
wants me to be without it. I am very hungry to be fed with His body and blood, soul and
divinity. This month I am going to buy a bus pass I can take the bus while it is still light
out. I will leave the rest to God to figure out.

My instruction in the Church was no instruction and I have still to attend a parish that
gives me the spiritual feed I need. And if I feel this way then I imagine thousands of
others must feel the same. Our Protestant brothers and sisters may leave out a lot
but I will give them this: They know how to feed their people good spiritual food, not soaped
down to please the crowd or rather some of the people who would love to see Modernism
take over. The only thing in the Catholic Church that has ever fed me is Mass, Jesus HImself
and nothing else. I am there because the Blessed Mother led me there and Our Lord has
made it known to my heart that He does not want me leave, as I did before, but to stay and
pray for Holy Mother Church. She is in a very bad situation and it has been very difficult
for me to learn anything there. Believe me, it has been all I can do just to keep my faith
together with little to no help. Aside from this fourm there is no one to support me.
I do this alone with only Jesus and Mary as my guides. His family in the Catholic Church
has failed me terribly. Mass is the only reason worth going to Church at all. I go for Jesus
not anyone else.
