xSilverPhinx
It's not really a concept of God either. Back in the '90s Leon Lederman (former director of Fermilab) wrote a popular physics book called The God Particle and the media latched onto this term as if it was at all official. If you read that book you'll see that's it's rather zany and this is just one of a number of goofy nicknames and things that are coined. If you happen to get the most recent edition of that book you'll see that Lederman basically regrets that title and doesn't approve of the now widespread use of that nickname (he even tries to blame his coauthor for the title decision, lol). Anyway, my point is that it is not a nickname used by particle physics and it is not a deep philosophical concept of anything, much less a concept of God. My belief is that they wanted an attention-grabbing title that exaggerates the importance of the Higgs. At the time the SSC was under construction but still on thin ice because many in congress wanted to cut the funding.
I know lol I don't know of anyone who actually took it seriously from either a physics or philosophical/theological point of view. Do you?
As long as you realize that calling the Higgs "the God particle" was basically just a joke by Lederman and hte media is dumb, I'll forgive you. Lederman in the preface to the 2006 edition:
Now, as for the title, The God Particle, my coauthor, Di[s][/s]ck Teresi, has agreed to accept the blame (I paid him off). I mentioned the phrase as a joke once in a speech, and he remembered it and used it as the working title of the book. "Don't worry," he said, "no publisher ever uses the working title on the final book." The rest is history. The title ended up offending two groups: 1) those who believe in God, and 2) those who do not.
There. I'm done. edit: stupid philters. I'll remember that preface from now on and if by any chance I ever come across somebody using the words 'god particle', I'll let them know.
Yeah, and my impression is that the so-called God gene hypothesis has been pretty well trashed. At least as it was formulated in that popular book. As far as the general idea that some people have more of a natural capacity for religious experience, I don't doubt this at all. I can imagine how the media would tend to handle a story on the so-called God gene. lol. The other day one headline I was seeing around basically stated that electrons are tiny spheres. There's always something to be botched for the general public.

Laudate_Dominum
Sorry for the terse response, I had something on the stove. But yeah, I'd bet that the God gene phrase was coined to hype up an otherwise unremarkable book. I wanna say that guy was trashed at a talk during one of the Beyond Belief meetings, but I could be mixed up about that (I'm pretty sure it was something I saw via the science network though). Anyway, if you're suggesting that the "God gene" buzzword is comparable to "God particle" I'd be inclined to agree. edit: typo Edited May 28, 2011 by Laudate_Dominum
