Perhaps it is so, but the Brazilians are better than all of the other Latins.

[quote name='Ed Normile' timestamp='1306301637' post='2245666']Take for example the simple question , Which way is center street ? 22 letters and 1 punctuation mark, translated to Spanish it becomes , ¿Qué camino es la calle del centro? 27 letters and 2 punctuation marks! Thats five extra letters and an extra punctuation mark.

You're translating too literally. An easier way to say "Which way is Center Street" would be "Donde esta Calle Centro" (or "Donde es Calle Centro," not sure in this case).

The double punctuation can be useful. You don't have to wait until the end of the sentence to know whether it's a question.

It's true that Spanish has a lot of phrases that would sound very Shakespearean if translated literally into English. I say "Shakespearean" because it's sometimes funny to me how Spanish will use a word in a way that they would have used it in Shakespearean English, but not in ours.

But Spanish can be more economical than English. In English, if someone asks "Where are you going," you would answer "To John's house." In Spanish, you could just respond "Donde Juan."
