FARGO, N.D. (AP) - The Catholic bishop in Fargo has commissioned the diocese to open a chapel near North Dakota's only abortion clinic in Fargo.
Diocese spokeswoman Tanya Watterud told KFGO radio that the chapel will be open on days when abortions are performed at the clinic.
Clinic manager Sarah Haeder said in a written statement that the clinic will remain a safe haven for women regardless of its neighbors.
Watterud said the chapel will open June 1 and its costs are being covered by donations.
Personally I don't see how on earth an abortion clinic could be safer than a Catholic chapel. At least children aren't murdered in Catholic chapels. Children are routinely murdered at abortion clinics so yeah I don't hardly think that an abortion clinic would be safer.

well wait, there's not a lot of info given in that blurb. I don't think having a place of prayer near the place where such heinous acts take place, if you believe in the power of prayer to conquer the evil in this world. The article is a bit ambiguous as to why they're opening a chapel in this area. Is it because they want to provide safety of the clinic's patients from the "harassment" of believers? Is it to pray for abortion to end and/or provide emergency pregnancy alternatives? Something else?

We know what the clinic manager says but on what grounds does she say this? What does the archdiocese say in regards to its motives?

Wow yeah, even if it wasn't an abortion clinic, any sort of surgical center is more dangerous then a place of worship, this manager is just telegraphing ignorence, never mind the fact that abortion clinics are killing children.

Why are they opening the chapel in this area? Really? You have to ask? My guess is there is going to be some Eucharistic adoration going on in reparation for the horrific sins going on next door. Perhaps some daily masses. From my understanding sidewalk counselors do not harrass and it is ridiculous to suggest that some patient, going to get an abortion, harrassed by protestors would run right over to the chapel.
FARGO – A Catholic chapel focused on prayers to end abortion will open in an office building neighboring North Dakota’s only abortion clinic.

The Catholic Diocese of Fargo will open the Visitation Chapel at 502 1st Ave. N. on June 1. The chapel will offer Mass at 8 a.m. Wednesdays, followed by Eucharistic adoration and recited prayers until 3:45 p.m. It will be locked the rest of the week.

The Red River Women’s Clinic is at 512 1st Ave. N., and sees patients on Wednesdays.

“We believe prayer is so powerful and what we’re engaged in is a spiritual battle,” said Rachelle Sauvageau, director of the diocese’s Respect Life Office. “It’s a place where we need an intense and focused prayer and that’s why we feel the need to be right there.”

The Visitation Chapel fills the third floor of the Gibb Building with its windows looking out on the clinic. Its name reflects the passage of biblical Scripture when Mary visits her cousin Elizabeth while both are with child.

There is an altar in the chapel, as well as chairs and sacred images, Sauvageau said. The Diocese of Fargo will be responsible for its operation and activities. Priests from across the metro area will be scheduled to offer Mass. The chapel will not be sustained by diocesan funds, but by donations.

Sidewalk counselors and people who pray in front of the clinic are not organized so will likely continue

their individual efforts, Sauvageau said.

“There are a lot of people who can’t stand outside – the elderly and other people who don’t feel called to be down there on the sidewalk,” Sauvageau said. “This gives them the opportunity to be there in a real present way.”

In a written statement, Tammi Kromenaker with the Red River Women’s Clinic said the clinic has provided care for women across the region because they need its services.

“It doesn’t matter who moves in next door, across the street or down the block. We are a safe haven for women to consider what they need to do with this pregnancy and for their lives,” she said.

The Gibb building also houses two photography businesses, the Fargo-Moorhead Coalition for Homeless Persons and the Fargo-Moorhead Area Foundation.

Cher Hersrud, advancement officer with the foundation, said her office was told by the landlord that a nonprofit related to the anti-abortion cause had rented the space, but she was unaware it was a chapel. She said she can’t imagine the chapel would cause any issues.

“We certainly wouldn’t have any objections to it,” Hersrud said.
You never know. Everyone is different, and hopefully folks can discern the difference.

The chapel is in the building across from the clinic, so it's pretty discreet. It's set to only be open on Wednesdays, which is the day that the clinic receives patients.

I think we should add to our prayer list that this chapel could be opened for at least another day or two throughout the week. It's understandable that women might not want to go there on a Wednesday, as they might feel intimidated being around a gathering of pro-life people who are praying for them, no matter how caring or sincere the intent may be.

However... That's not to say that a woman contemplating abortion wouldn't want to seek some quiet time inside the chapel. It is a sacred space where no one would leave untouched by God. Even if she goes through with the abortion, she might one day be a woman who prays or counsels against having that abortion. And she would be someone worth listening to, because she's been there.
