Is it really our business how poor she is? If she says she can't afford it, I'm inclined to believe her. She's obviously trying to get to Mass and not just using it as a cop-out, or she wouldn't have even bothered to bring it up. I also would definitely not be inclined to use public transportation in some places if I were a traveling alone, because it is not always that safe for women.

did i say i didn't believe her? if its not my business to know such things then she is free to tell me that. i don't need you to come on here and get on my case about questions i ask some ELSE. if she doesn't feel comfortable answering those questions then she can say so and that's fine. although i would like to hear from the person i was actually talking to and not a third party which my question was in no way directed towards. thank you and peace be with you.

a bus pass is really cheap. are you that poor you can't afford a bus pass? it usually costs less than 2 dollars a ride. so there and back is less than 4 dollars a week. i am not mocking you, i honestly want to know. if the buses come on satuday you could always go to vigil mass. you said they don't come on sunday but i imagine they come on saturday.

i think i will break down and buy a bus pass or otherwise i may not get to Mass at all. For the month it will run me
about $30. One pass is $7.50 and there are 10 rides so some months I will need them all.

Its hard isn't it? I live about 200yds from my parish maximum, so even though I don't like it there, at least its local! But a few months ago my employer had her mother in hospital and was away for a month, meaning I had the little boy for that time solid. They are not religious at all - almost anti-religious really - so I couldn't take him with me, but it was so hard not going, especially as it included Ash Wednesday.

I hope you manage to find some sort of s solution soon.

I've have had similar problems in the past. Look at alternative places that offer mass. I went to church for years at the chapel of the Catholic hospital near where I lived. I have gone to mass at convents, at nursing homes, and even at a chapel at the airport. I've attended mass conducted by a retired priest who was confined to his home. Also, EWTN is broadcast without being scrambled. Any satellite dish can pick it up. We have a friend who picked up a small dish at a pawn shop, just so he could watch Mother Angelica. It also broadcasts on the internet. In some places you can pick it up on the radio. Think outside the box, but if you can't make it to mass, even with diligent effort, that's okay. You'll get no judgment from me about it.

My mom gets EWTN over the air-- no cable, no satilite... wish we did... :sad2:

You know, there *are* people out there so poor that yes this would be too much. When I was growing up in the 80s, a bus ride was 50 cents. My parents couldn't afford the extra 3 dollars a week for three of us to get to church -- it would mean taking money out of something necessary (like rent, food, electric bill, etc).

I did read your response to MissScripture ... and decided to post anyway. Sometimes questions such as "are you that poor you can't afford a bus pass?" is better sent via PM than a post.

i don't know about Debra, but I know that even in my town of over 100k people, the buses don't run on Sundays, and has shorter hours/reduced routes on Saturdays. :idontknow: as in, they don't run past 5.
[/quote]

mine too. they run once an hour on Saturday and quit earlier. and in the winter i'd have to wait downtown
for the bus in the dark. it's not safe down there.

I am on Social Security and we haven't got a cost of living raise
for the last 3 years. The president froze our incomes.

Many times when the economy is no bueno, one of the first things cut are the mass transit systems...not sure how they do that with the unions and all.. but that has been my experience.
