junipercomics
Probably not many people would remember but Father Justin McCarthy, a member of the Secular Franciscan Order for seventy-one years, created a cartoon called Brother Juniper in the late 1950's. It ran in over 150 newspapers for thirty years and then was almost completely forgotten. It was the only religious-themed cartoon to be internationally syndicated. A project was just started to hopefully acquaint a new generation with Brother Juniper or, at the very least, digitally archive McCarthy's work before the last few decent quality first editions are gone. These cartoons are still very relevant and funny even after collecting dust for thirty years. Feel free to swing by and see how the project is going at www.brotherjuniper.com. New cartoons are posted to the site every couple weeks. junipercomics
The Project is releasing two books that were originally going to be released this winter in the third week of July instead - Inside Brother Juniper and More Brother Juniper. Unfortunately, we still have not found copies of the final two books of the series - The Whimsical World of Brother Juniper and Well Done, Brother Juniper - that are suitable for archiving. We're hoping there are still a couple of the Hanover House trade paperback copies left somewhere in the world. And here are cartoons 24 and 27 from Inside Brother Juniper. Have a great 4th of July!
