To Go Or Not To Go?

If you go to the ordination, approach the trip as a pilgrimage rather than just a trip. Use it as a chance to further yourself spiritually in preparing to enter religious life. But, I would say use your own money for the trip...don't use anyone else's money that was given to you for the specific purpose of paying back your loans.

Ash Wednesday

Your best friend's ordination is a "pretty big deal" in my opinion.

If you're living modestly otherwise in order to pay off your loans, and also paying them off yourself in addition to the aid elsewhere, I think you should go.

I think you should go.

I know if I was being Ordained, then I would want all of my friends there.

Thanks, pham. I've decided to go ahead and attend- I don't have to take any days off of work AND the ticket prices went down a little bit more today. I'm going to use my tax return to pay for the trip, instead of making that "extra" payment. Thanks for putting my mind at ease- I was so mixed up with my desires that I knew I couldn't look at the situation objectively to know what was prudent and what wasn't!

All that being said...

Praise God!!! Two and a half weeks until his ordination!!! :dance:

After thinking about it some more, I'm in agreement with the rest of the posters. I think you would definitely regret it if you were not able to attend. Also, it occurred to me that since you have been spending more money on your bills rather than yourself, that it is important to have this experience--if only to get away for a time and enjoy yourself. Make sure you get his blessing after his ordination! I've heard that first blessings from newly ordained priests are very powerful! I will say some prayers for your friend during my novena to St. Joseph this week, and I wish him all the best in his priestly ministry! :like:

We're having a small, private Mass on Monday morning :) but yes, I will definitely be receiving his first blessing!

If anyone would like to join me, I have been praying the following prayer for him. He wrote it himself and it is a prayer I have promised to pray each day for him:

O Mary and Joseph, the Son's own saints,
by the power of His Priestly Passion,
Within my priest, my spiritual father,
a priestly heart now fashion.

Carve in him a curate's heart,
to sanctify with Sacraments blest;
Compose in him a prophet's heart,
to preach the Truth confessed;
Cultivate in him a shepherd's heart,
to lead to Life's true rest.

Find for him a poor heart,
others' needs first to acquire;
Forge for him a chaste heart,
fused in Love's own fire;
Fix for him a docile heart,
obedience in will to inspire.

And when his service here is ended,
by age or sickness or sword,
Confide him to the Sacred Heart,
his priesthood's sweet reward.
Amen.

I am deeply saddened that a religious order you are joining will not assume your debt.
From my experience ... most orders (at least for women) do *not* assume a candidate's debt. Each time I have entered (twice) I have had to be debt free beforehand.

it is sad -- especially since if a candidate returns to life outside of a convent, my experience is that *more* debt is taken on (I don't have the family to depend on, so each time I've started from zero). I'm now in debt up to my ears, so if per chance another order pops up I can't do anything for years.

A wise choice, I don't think you'll regret it.

I've never attended an Ordination. I've seen every Sacrament administered except Holy Orders. I only hope someday I have the grace to attend one.
