Sand Hornet!

Recommended Posts

There was a FEMALE SAND HORNET (aka Cicada Killer Wasp) IN MY HOUSE TODAY.

Probably the most terrified I have ever been of a creature in my entire life, EVER. The maintenance guys came and killed it, but I'm still afraid to go downstairs into my kitchen, which is where it was.

HAVE ANY OF YOU EVER SEEN THESE THINGS?!?!??!!

Pity me, pity me, pity me!!!!

Pray I don't have an infestation. We moved here last August, which apparently is after their "season." I saw sand piles under trees and it didn't click. I bet they are sand hornet burrows. I hope I'm being a pessimist.

And yes, while they don't normally go after humans, like any bee, if they get disturbed they will sting. And you can imagine how painful that sting would be. PLUS my husband is VERY allergic to bees! I'm so glad we got a refill of his epi-pen the other day!!! I sure hope we don't ever have to use it!

i just read on wiki that the stings are not that bad. They describe them as pin pricks.

but, yeah, i wouldn't want to prove the truthiness of that claim.

prayers, indeed.

I *think* it may actually have been a European hornet, which is a little worse than a cicada killer, because the females tend to come out in early May, whereas with the cicada killers it's usually later in the summer. But I'm no expert.

Thanks for the prayers, I'm still afraid to go downstairs. I'm afraid to leave the bedroom! I'm afraid to leave my baby alone in the crib!!!

We had hornets at Quidenham and I once had the 'pleasure' of waking up nose to nose with one I had thought I had got rid of before bed!! They are huge and the sting would probably hurt a fair bit, but they do not sting often. Like wasps, they can sting many times without hurting themselves (whereas bees will die about 50% of the time) but they are far less likely to sting than wasps are. If you do have nests I would definately get them dealt with, but wouldn't panic over a couple, they will be far more afraid than you are!

Did you save them to fry up for a snack?

D'awww they are harmless. In fact if you hold out your hand, sometimes they will perch on them ^_^

That said, I wouldn't risk it. :P They tend to be just as terrified of humans as we are of them.
