MeteorShower
So, I'm doing this assignment in school (we had to choose a person) and I chose Mother Teresa. So, I'm including quite a chunk of information of the Missionaries of Charity. I was wondering if I could get some help with where they are located throughout the world. So far, I've got India, USA, Venezuela, Rome, Albania, Tanzania, Iraq, and Cuba. If anyone knows of any other countries where they have convents/homes/missions, I would appreciate it greatly. I'm particularly interested to see if they are in "first-world/western" countries such as Australia, Canada, UK, France, for example. Thanks in advance!
Indeed, they are located in Canada, in at least one city that I know of: Vancouver, British Columbia. This is the description from the archdiocese's website:
The Society of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother M. Teresa MC, in the year 1946, is an International Community - composed of active and contemplative branches, Sisters, Brothers and Fathers with Perpetual, Public Vows of Chastity, Poverty, Obedience, and wholehearted and Free Service to the poorest of the poor. Our AIM is to quench the infinite thirst of Jesus Christ on the Cross for love of Souls. Our particular Mission is to labor at the Salvation and Sanctification of the poorest of the poor - by living our 4th Vow of Whole Hearted and Free Service to the poorest of the poor. Our Mission here in Vancouver was founded on the 29th May, 1988. Our Mother was invited by our Late Archbishop Most Rev. James F. Carney. In the course of the conversation with the Archbishop, Mother was inspired to open a home for Single Mothers. Our Ministry also includes Visiting the Shut-ins, Bringing Holy Communion to the sick in our Parish, Visiting the Jails (Women's Prison, Pre-trial Centre and Youth Jail), Teaching C.C.D. in our Parish, and Giving food to the needy. We also conduct a Summer Camp for the needy children. For more information contact: Sr. M. Crispina, M.C. Missionaries of Charity 2475 E. 48th Ave. Vancouver, BC V5S IG5
Although not working directly within the Downtown eastside of Vancouver (probably one of the poorest urban places in Canada,) there is a lot of poverty among many in Vancouver, along with many wealthy. I only just learned of their presence in Vancouver a couple years ago, although they have been there over 20 years. I hope this helps your research. God bless
Lisa
The Missionaries of Charity, which began as a small Order with 12 members in Calcutta, today has more than 4,000 nuns running orphanages, AIDS hospices, charity centres worldwide, and caring for refugees, the blind, disabled, aged, alcoholics, the poor and homeless and victims of floods, epidemics and famine in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, Poland, and Australia. In 1965, by granting a Decree of Praise, Pope Paul VI granted Mother Teresa permission to expand her order to other countries. The order's first house outside India was in Venezuela. Presently, the "Missionaries of Charity" has presence in more than 100 countries.
