I was just thinking the other week that I'd not seen him in anything lately.
'Playing Jesus wrecked my career': Passion of the Christ actor said Hollywood has shunned him

Actor Jim Caviezel has claimed his Hollywood career was wrecked by playing Jesus.

He said he was ‘rejected in my own industry’ after taking on the lead role in Mel Gibson's controversial movie ‘The Passion of the Christ’.

Since playing the son of God in the 2004 film he said offers had dried up and he is shunned by many within the industry.

Although a box office hit taking more than $400million worldwide it was condemned as being anti-Semitic.

Gibson, the film's director, was later accused of making anti-Jewish remarks after being arrested for drink driving.

Caviezel said he was warned against taking the part by Gibson who warned him he would never work in Hollywood again.

'He said, "You'll never work in this town again." I told him, "We all have to embrace our crosses".' Caviezel told an audience of churchgoers in Orlando, Florida.

Since Passion of the Christ, the 42-year-old has only appeared in a handful of films.

Prior to playing Jesus he was considered one of Hollywood rising stars and appeared in The Count of Monte Cristo’ and Angel Eyes with Jennifer Lopez.

One of his biggest hits was in 2000 with time-travel thriller Frequency opposite Dennis Quaid.

Caviezel, a devout Roman Catholic, said he knew playing Jesus would be risky.

'Jesus is as controversial now as he has ever been,’ Caviezel said. ‘Not much has changed in 2,000 years.’

He said he wasn't worried about the stalling of his career.

During his 20 minute talk, Caviezel spoke of the troubles that have dogged Gibson.
‘Mel Gibson, he's a horrible sinner, isn't he?’ Caviezel said. ‘Mel Gibson doesn't need your judgment, he needs your prayers.’

Caviezel said that his faith is his guide, both personally and professionally.

He said it was no coincidence that ‘in my 33rd year, I was called to play Jesus,’ and joked about his initials also being the same as Jesus Christ.

The actor spoke about the film and its negative effect on his career while at a megachurch in Orlando to promote a new audio book of the Bible.

Caviezel plays Jesus and other Hollywood stars, including Richard Dreyfuss, appear on the CD.

Pointing to a DVD of his famous film, Caviezel said ‘This is The Passion of the Christ.’

Pointing to the CD boxed set of the new audio book of the Bible, Words of Promise, he said: ‘This is The Passion on Steroids.’

I replied to a very similar discussion on Catholic Answers last night:

Hollywood is a very atheistic world. There are always risks in playing a role like this because a lot of people in the movie and TV world do not believe in God and shun anything that promotes Him. I hope Jim realizes how much good came out of this movie, as well. I think it is an incredibly powerful movie and I watch it every year. :like:

He was amazing in the movie . . .

I agree, a great performance (and much better than the performance of Christ in Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth," which always annoys me with its long dramatic pauses and overacting).

But, if "The Passion of the Christ" ruined Caviezel's career, I doubt it's because the movie is about Christ. It's because the movie was made by Mel Gibson. That movie will always be associated with Gibson, for good and bad.

I'd say the fallout is from both the role and Mel Gibson. It's unfortunate, but not surprising in an industry where spoiled and overrated starlets like Lindsay Lohan keep getting publicity and multiple chances based on notoriety.

I think Caviezel's had limitations about what he's been able to do anyway. Staying relevant in that seedy business is already quite difficult, often actors and actresses have to do things that are morally compromising in the work that is done, or in order to get work in the first place.

he had/has a graced career. Early on he gets the most film time in the Thin Red Line, one of Malick's masterpieces. I mean all the big name actors were dying to get in that movie, and Malick shot something like 500 to a 1000 minutes of film. Originally he was going to feature Adrien Brody, but Caviziel wins him over.

Then the Passion of Christ.

Talk about being on top on the greatest works of art in film. It is a gift to us. Hopefully something else will come up for him. He is a wonderful human person.

He was featured in The Stoning of Soraya M. since then and it was a stellar film, even if it didn't gross what the Passion did. If you haven't seen it, please go see it - it's one of the best that i have seen in years.

My opinion is that the killer to his career wasn't the passion but rather his staunch moral values. As someone pointed out Hollywood is very Atheistic and if you wear your faith on your sleeve.... Good luck trying to make it. Lucky for Jim his goal isn't being super famous but rather to truly live out his faith. I think it was last year or maybe the year before he made the mini-series "the Prisoner"- (He was on World Over live talking about it) you can clearly tell that he doesn't have a huge interest in mainstream Hollywood.

Good for him!

Jim may not have the hollywood glamour that many actors enjoy but The Stoning of Soraya M. won over 5 awards, including the Toronto International Film Festival, etc. Considering it was only in 27 theatres and debuted at #32, it would be considered to be a minor success. I mean, it was a low budget film but made a huge impact as did the book. My Muslim and Non-Muslim friends often mention that film but rarely ever recognize him as the guy from the Passion.
