Okay so this past weekend, i took a trip to Notre Dame for an ordination mass for a deacon that was becoming a priest from my church. He was being ordained as a Holy Cross Priest, and was ordained at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the Notre Dame Campus. Me being a sophomore in high school, i have started the college search process, so we counted this Notre Dame trip a college visit. I went there before when i was really young, but i was too young to appreciate the university as a whole. When i went this time, i ABSOLUTELY LOVED it. To me it has everything i want in a college, and i really want to work extra hard to get in since it is one of the most competitive schools to get in to. Is there any advice on what i need to do to get in? Prayers would be fantastic, but is there anything i need to know on what i need to do? Grades? SAT and ACT scores? Anything would be great. Thank you SOOOOO much!!!! =)

Ok I got in, but i may not be the best source on this, as my circumstances were fairly unique. Personally I have grades in the low A's, I'm 18th in my class of 220, 33 composite on the ACT, 2100 SAT. Now, I'm also a minority (which i'm pretty sure helped me), and am considered low income (again, this also helped, more on that later). I know that Notre Dame looks for the top 5% of the graduating class, and you need good standardized test scores, preferably better then mine. Hope that helps!

I actually applied through an outside organization, Questbridge, which runs a scholarship competition for low income students, so i didn't exactly take a traditional route in applying. I think this, combined with my status as minority, really helped me get in, not sure if I would have gotten in without it.

Be a good football player.

Or even above average.
Or even mediocre.
Or even be able to pick a football out of a line-up of a football, golf club, small box, and live duck.
Judging by the fact that the Big East is a has-been conference, I don't think even Rudy would have a tough time making first string nowadays.

Make a strong academic record and get really involved in something outside of class. I went to Notre Dame, and all my classmates had good grades in high school. If you're passionate about something and have some kind of goal in mind that Notre Dame will help you fulfill, you'll set yourself apart. Get to know some of your teachers too, powerful recommendations will come in handy.

Get *great* grades. Ideally the top 5% of your class. Score well on your standardized tests. Participate in extra-curricular activities, preferably in leadership roles. Learn how to play a sport.

This is actually good advice, a huge percentage of ND students were athletes in high school, and it's considered one of the most physically active campuses in the country.

yeah the problem is that i make high B's and low A's and since my school is competitive already (i'm 136 out of 562 sophomores) i dont know if i'll be able to make my class rank go any lower than it is. Alot of smart people go to my school, and it's really tough to make the rank go lower. I am in the top 25% and my GPA is a 3.5, but its going to be a hard journey to make it to where i need to be. I have the intentions of taking the SAT and ACT twice with preparatory classes, summer tutoring with what i need to get the most help with, and with dual course credit with the community college where i live. I am a minority too, so maybe that will help just like it did to you. But hopefully with alot of prayer and hard work, i can accomplish my goal!!!

i am a swimmer, and i play three instruments in my school's band, so maybe that'll add to my credentials.

I have no idea on how to get you into Notre Dame, but I have another suggestion for you. Have you heard of Holy Cross? It's across the street from ND, is more Orthodox, is WAYWAYWAY cheaper, less competitive, smaller (which I count as a good thing because you get to know ALL of the professors, even ones you don't have), and when you go to Holy Cross, you get a LOT of student privileges at Notre Dame.

I know it's not the same, but it's something to think about.

Dang. I guess some schools are different than others when it comes to standardized test scores. I go to a pretty good university - and my SAT scores were poor. I got into a pretty good grad program - and my GRE scores were pathetic. Unless ND is real intense with the scores don't sweat that aspect too much.
