Discerning Orders

Ok. So I once believed I was called to be a Dominican. But lately, I've felt the need to look into other orders other than the NDs and the DSMMEs. Because I'm moving (another banging head and wall event) I decided to contact some different religious orders and the new diocese where I'll be. Reading the little blurbs about all of the communities is great, but then I look at their website and the sisters don't wear habits!

I know I am called to wear a habit, and so many of these orders don't wear them! :wall:

Does anyone know of religious orders that wear the habit, teach, and do mission work?

Anyone?

Thanks! My head and wall also thank you.

Dieu vous benisse.

They are a missionary order that is dedicated to the evangelization of the culture. Their apostolate:

Popular Missions, intensive two-week parish evangelization according to the method of St. Alphonsus of Liguori. "In response to the Bishops' requests, the Institute can accept to help in parishes, preferably in missionary areas or those in most need" cf. Constitutions, 173).

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola: we assist our priests in the work of offering this retreat as a spiritual apostolate to the laity. The principal goal is to teach the participants how to overcome oneself and direct one's life according to God's will. For more information on spiritual exercises visit IVE

Ignatian Spiritual Exercises.

Parish work and sacristy work with the intention of promoting the solemnity of the celebration of the Sunday Liturgy (cf. Const., 181).

Teaching in elementary schools, secondary schools and catechism programs

Assisting in Theological and Philosophical publications, including English and Spanish texts of IVE Press (www.ivepress.org) and through participation in the Fr. Cornelio Fabro Cultural Project (www.corneliofabro.org).

Youth Ministry: pilgrimages, the Annual IVE Youth Day, summer camps, campus ministry, lay volunteer opportunities (see the Lay Missionaries page) and World Youth Day.

Works of Mercy: orphanages, homes for disabled children and youth, homes for the elderly, work in hospitals and nursing homes, and pro-life counseling and education.

I have contacted the Sisters of the Most Holy Soul of Christ the Lord way back in the beginning of my discernment. I was on the cusp of making a visit there until I learned that they do missionary work, which I don't feel an attraction to. The Vocation Director is amesome!

While the FSP don't wear like a traditional traditional habit, I kind of consider their "uniform" a habit. And they wear veils! :dance3:

Wow, so many good suggestions! I hope at least a few are geographically within range of your new home. Here are a few more to think about. Sorry, I am too tired to post websites, but I think you can google most of them.

Missionary Benedictine Sisters
Congregation of Religious Missionaries of St. Dominic
Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart
Institute of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows
Sisters of the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (part of Fr. Corapi's order}

You probably can find more on the website of the CMSWR.

Good luck!

LaPetiteSoeur,

Have you ever met the Apostolic Sisters of St. John? They're part of the Community of St. John, which also has the Brothers and Contemplative Sisters. I lived with the Community of St. John for a year, so I know and love them!! The community was founded in France, but has since founded priories all around the world, including the USA! Also, if you like Dominican spirituality, they were founded by a saintly Dominican priest, so they have a strong Dominican influence (preaching and teaching)! The Apostolic sisters do mission work all over the world. Here is one of my friends, Sister Mary, who was just sent to Cameroun to teach at a school for girls for the next couple of years (she's the one on the left). If you have any questions about them, let me know!! :) Also, here's some info on them: http://www.soeursapo...we-are_a43.html

I forgot to add - someone entering the Apostolic Sisters of St. John does eventually have to learn French...but it's definitely not as bad/hard as it sounds! Maybe you already speak a little? I was with them in France for a year and the language comes really quickly! Plus they are a really international community, so they're used to people having to learn French - they were so incredibly patient with my French for the first month or so that I was there! (By the way, I wasn't discerning with them, just studying philosophy with them...there are two programs they have in France and one in Princeville, Illinois, where young people can participate in the prayer life, apostolate, and studies of the Community). The Apostolic Sisters are already several Americans at their main formation house, too! And they are very traditional - with the full habit (as you can see above...veil, wimple, scapular, rosary, and sandals!! :)), consecration to Our Lady (that they renew daily after Mass), adoration twice daily, etc. Hope this helps! You're in my prayers. :)
