Cherie
...is Friday. Why do I care? I'm not Anglican, I'm not British, I don't know any of them personally, and there are a thousand other reasons why it really shouldn't mean a thing to me ... But for some odd reason that I can't even explain, I'm actually really looking forward to it! Eh, maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic? I love fairy tale weddings? It's my inner 7-year-old girly-girl coming out again?
Rebecca2009
I might watch it if I can get up early enough. Wow, I remember I did get up early to watch Lady Diana marry Prince Charles. I can't believe it was so long ago. I was only 18 or 19 then! I like Royal Weddings cause it makes me think about the Royal Wedding of Jesus... .Cannot wait for that!!! IgnatiusofLoyola
It's nice to see I'm not the only Anglophile on Phatmass. I'll be getting up early on Friday. (And, yes, I got up early for Charles and Diana's wedding.)
Era Might
Maybe if this were like Jane Eyre marrying Mr. Rochester, the orphan girl and the rich man who was burned in a fire, it might be a "fairy tale wedding." But other than the fact that William's a prince and she's (well, I don't really know anything about her), what's there to care about? Maybe if the fate of the English kingdom rested on William begetting a son who would continue the royal dynasty and prevent dynastic wars, maybe I'd care. Maybe. I hadn't thought of the pageantry. I suppose that might be a reason to tune in. Maybe. Or maybe not. (I'm guessing not for me). IgnatiusofLoyola
Was it to see Charles and Diana or just to see what a royal wedding is like? I hadn't thought of the pageantry. I suppose that might be a reason to tune in. Maybe. Or maybe not. (I'm guessing not for me).
Yes, the pageantry is amesome--and takes much more work to pull off than it appears. And, I just like weddings. I also watched the wedding of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden last summer. After a courtship of many years duration, she married her personal trainer. Lillibett might like this story better because Daniel was not "smooth" at all, and Victoria had to fight a lot of battles to be allowed to marry him. And, he has had to make the sacrifice of at least somewhat conforming. It was one of the most romantic weddings I've ever seen. I don't find Daniel very attractive, but Princess Victoria obviously does, and there were little signs of affection between them (but VERY subtle and nothing offensive) that showed that this is no arranged marriage, but a couple that truly loves each other. And they've dated for something like 6 years (or more), so this isn't a "quickie crush." BTW, I loved Victoria's dress, which was VERY simple. She wore the family heirloom tiara made of cameos, with a lace veil. It's a VERY hard tiara to wear and look good--but Victoria pulled it off. The tiara and the lace veil were so elaborate that she wore a very simple dress to balance them off--and it worked. Not to mention that I have never seen her with such a "real," ear-to-ear smile. Not the smile that royals HAVE to wear, but genuine happiness. And, Daniel started to "tear up" during the wedding. Unfortunately, any woman marrying into the British royal family has to be at least something of a "cool customer" just to survive and not be eaten alive by the bureaucracy. My hope is that there is more to Will and Kate's relationship than what we are allowed to see. Unlike his father, William has a backbone, and Kate certainly has served more than her 7 years, so I, ever optimistic, hope that this one is real. British Royal marriage is just too strange a circumstance to ever allow a truly good marriage, so my hope is that this one not only survives, but has at least some real love. That may be the best we can hope for in the circumstances. Sweden isn't as "hidebound" as the Brits, and their royals are allowed to lead something a little closer to a real life, so there is a better chance at true happiness for Daniel and Victoria. I don't expect most people in the U.S. to care about the wedding. After all, we fought a revolution to escape this stuff. But, I've gotten used to the fact that I am rarely like anyone else. And, I SHOULD be living in the UK, I'm such a Brit at heart. Edited April 26, 2011 by IgnatiusofLoyola
I think Americans will be interested just because it's a celebrity wedding, not so much because it's a royal wedding. I'm guessing the British care more about the royalness of it? And I can't pass up a chance to quote Walt Whitman:
Other states indicate themselves in their deputies … but the genius of the United States is not best or most in its executives or legislatures, nor in its ambassadors or authors or colleges or churches or parlors, nor even in its newspapers or inventors … but always most in the common people. Their manners, speech, dress, friendship—the freshness and candor of their physiognomy—the picturesque looseness of their carriage … their deathless attachment to freedom—their aversion to anything indecorous or soft or mean—the practical acknowledgment of the citizens of one state by the citizens of all other states—the fierceness of their roused resentment—their curiosity and welcome of novelty—their self-esteem and wonderful sympathy—their susceptibility to a slight—the air they have of persons who never knew how it felt to stand in the presence of superiors—the fluency of their speech—their delight in music, the sure symptom of manly tenderness and native elegance of soul … their good temper and open handedness—the terrible significance of their elections—the President’s taking off his hat to them, not they to him—these too are unrhymed poetry. It awaits the gigantic and generous treatment worthy of it. --Walt Whitman, Preface to "Leaves of Grass"
Edited April 26, 2011 by Era Might
