My humble (maybe or maybe not) opinion -- I think it is a good movement for certain people. I know people who have gotten heavily involved through the neocatechumenal way -- and to that I'd be thankful.

However -- there is a sort of isolation/exclusivity that ends up happening. Those involved tend to really only deal with those in the way ... I would say primarily because of the time commitment involved.

I have also been told by people that at times when the way enters a parish it can kind of cause division. Again I think its because of what I called "exclusivity" ... because you get involved primarily with the way.

Hopefully no one misreads this as my saying "I'm for" or "I'm against" the way ... one of my godchildren is involved, and at least she has stayed involved with the Church thus far through her teen years.

If I can answer any questions feel free to PM ... I was involved to some degree years back. I decided not to commit to further working with the movement precisely because I like to go across movements/etc.

Blessings,

Vincent Vega

Without knowing anything about it, this:
" It was initiated in Madrid in 1964 by artist and musician Kiko Argüello and Carmen Hernandez as a response to the Second Vatican Council"
makes me very nervous, but this:
"and in 2008 was given definitive approval by the Holy See"
makes it seem okay. Hard to say without doing in depth research.

It is my understanding they teach errors. They refuse to say the Creed, which makes them very suspect. I heard this from someone who was in the Neocatechumenal Way. Here's a few more.

That I am not aware of. If so, who knows the context it was approved or the state of this organization at the time or was this org completely forthright with Rome or etc. etc. etc.

The wikipedia (saying this makes me want to , i can't believe i'm citing wikipedia) says this:
The Neocatechumenal Way, also known as the Neocatechumenate, NC Way or, colloquially,The Way is an organization within the Catholic Church dedicated to the Christian formation of adults. Deeply committed to the "New Evangelisation" called for byPope John Paul II, the Neocatechumenal Way also runs 75 "Redemptoris Mater" diocesan missionary seminaries in locations as diverse as Rome, Karachi, Sydney and Guam, and is responsible for hundreds of "Families in Mission", living in many cities around the World.

The Neocatechumenate is implemented in small, parish-based communities of between 20-50 people. There are around 40,000 such communities throughout the World, with an estimated 1 million members[sup][3][/sup].

The Statutes of the Neocatechumenal Way were approved ad experimentum in 2002 and the Church gave final approval of the statutes on June 13, 2008.[sup][4][/sup].
Now my knowledge of what all this means is limited... not sure what the approval means..... so.... there's that.

then there is this: http://www.catholic-...humenal_way.htm

and within that this picture

so I don't know.... it DOES seem suspect

and here is the website for the organization itself:

It does have approval from Rome ... and what you are seeing is someone singing one of the Psalms. Also something to keep in mind -- not all countries are used to using organs during liturgy. Most Latin American countries use the guitar ... case in point. Imagine a chapel in a rural area without any electricity. How can you use an organ? Also -- organs are quite expensive, whereas guitars are more available. So when I saw the use of guitars in the liturgy, this to me is a norm in spanish Masses.

The neocatechumenal way started in Spain BTW.

Those that get involved tend to become very faithful to the Catholic Church. And the priests that I know who are involved are very traditional-minded.

The best way to know about a movement is to talk to someone currently involved. In particular I would contact one of the priests involved. Its quite easy to get (mis)information, especially through the net.

Blessings,

Nihil Obstat

If the choice is between guitar and no instruments, I'd go with no instruments 110 times out of 100.
