Question About The Time Of Jesus' Death

I just had a question that has been weighing on my mind. I noticed in the Scripture readings I did yesterday (Good Friday) that it states that Jesus died at the 9th hour. I know that 3pm is traditionally the time that Jesus died, so I was rather vexed as to why this is called the 9th hour. If it's in the afternoon, wouldn't it be in the 15th hour?

Thanks in advance for clearing this up.

This was a time before watches and clocks. It was the 9 hour after dawn.
