Rosary Fail

so I picked up a rosary off Amazon with some gift cards I had saved up. Saw the pic, didnt think there was nothing too odd about it. It did say it was a "rosary necklace" but I was like "I could still pray with it!" but.. it has 7 decades instead of 5. it was inexpensive (well free since it was gift cards) but this is rather puzzling lol. Could I still have it blessed?

Nihil Obstat

I think that's called something like a Franciscan Crown rosary. It's dedicated to the seven joys of Mary.

Oddly enough I seen these at a flea market. They were some beautiful rosaries so I stopped to look at them. There were three mexican guys in their early twenties looking at them ahead of me. They were trying them on their neck? as if they were for jewelry. The guy that bought one had a neat Our Lady of Guadalupe tattoo on his arm, so I said "You could have that Blessed at St Thomas Aquinas parish, its less than a mile east of here" he looked at me odd and asked why he would have it blessed. I told him that usually catholics have rosaries blessed to use them for prayer and he said he was not catholic. The guy selling them piped in these are not praying rosaries, they are fashion rosaries, that is when I noticed they had seven decades, some had five decades?, but had about 13 beads instead of ten, this was to make them hang down lower to wear them. Sad commentary on rosary use.

I just posted the above and seen Nihil's post showed up before mine, durn meddlin' kids! Anyhow I looked up Fransican Crown rosary and it seems like a fine devotion, I will have to try it, I know I can use my standard five decade rosary and just go two extra decades. I am 50 years old and am amazed that you can learn something new each day, even from a young punk like Nihil ! :smile2:

I'm pretty sure assaulting a cleric scores you an automatic excommunication. :proud:

Nope. Only under certain circumstances is there an automatic excommunication.

if it has 7 decades it is probably a Rosary of the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

i do the same thing. i like to say the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. i just use my regular rosary and go over to say the last two decades.
but they are not a whole decade. in the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows there are 7 Hail Mary's in each decade, not a full 10. the Franciscan Crown
may be different. the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows of Mary is called the Servite Rosary as well. They are known now as the Servants of Mary.

I made sure the decades have 10 beads, it does lol

It probably wasn't designed to be a Franciscan Crown Rosary, but I could use it as such! Wasn't familiar with it :) i'll probably get it Blessed then :)
