Ash Wednesday
I love the scapular and have a certain willingness to be devoted to it, but there's just one problem: my stupid sensitive skin. Often I will put it on but after a period of time it seems to irritate my skin and I have to remove it, I'm one of those unfortunate types that is prone to eczema and other such nonsense. Can you put it in a pocket or is there some other way to wear or have a devotion to it? I'm also allergic to nickel so I can't wear medals too often, either. Wasn't a problem at a younger age but I guess after I approached 30 it all went to doodie. Boo! Thoughts? Ash Wednesday
I guess I should clarify that in addition to nickel I generally don't wear jewelry, period. It might just be the rubbing itself against the skin that bugs it.

Good discussion of it I found here. http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=166161 So...eh, I have the wool one on right now, over the shirt. Sometimes I just tough it out and put up with the annoyance from time to time -- what matters most is the devotion itself, not to treat it like an amulet or superstition anyway. Last I checked God doesn't cast people into hell for wearing their scapulars wrong. Edited April 16, 2011 by Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday
Well shoot, I have to have a priest give a special blessing for me to be enrolled and experience the devotion in full in the first place. MissScripture
Unfortunately, I've been developing the same problem. I haven't been able to wear a wool one for years, because I get huge red welts from it. And more recently, various metals have started doing the same thing. I haven't been able to wear a lot of jewelry for quite some time, but I could still wear my medals. Now, if I wear those for more than a day at a time, they cause me to break out, too. MissScripture
Oh, and btw, washing machines and scapulars don't always get along, and most of the time the washing machine wins... Moral of the story: Check pockets.
Shana
If I were you I would wear the scapular, or perhaps in your case the scapular medal as you are an exceptional case and could substitute this, over your clothing. Ed Normile
My dear old Irish grandmother, may heaven be her bed, had very sensitive skin in her old age, she would always take her scapular and sew a silk pouch, I guess that would be how to describe it, maybe covering would be better, but anyway she would sew it over the scapular as the brown wool would cause her skin to get irritated and break open. Maybe you could try this with some cloth that you normally wear. ed
