how about having 8th graders act out the Passion, (and of course there was applause after) is that a no-no?

edit: I don't mean to discredit the 8th graders, they did a great job with it but.. you know

During Mass? Very much.

Ok so my school had a mass today, kind of a wrap up of a year long celebration of my schools fiftieth anniversary, and during the Communion meditation, there was a solo by one of the members of the chorus, which was really incredible, and at the end everybody started clapping. I'm pretty sure we are forbidden from clapping in mass, right? It really disrupted the mass, and was really annoying.

Focus belongs only on Jesus Christ on the altar. Clapping brings focus away from this. So YES! Clapping is very much inappropriate.

Did you suggest to her just precisely out of which orifice she should blow it?

I told her I was trying to use the music, which was beautiful, in my prayer to God. My concentration was on Him. Then I suggested she try that sometime.

A more elegant, if quaint, way of putting it.

the phrase: "Clapping in Mass", should always be followed by:

"Should Never, Ever, Be Done"

Yes I agree, but man every other church I go to has clapping during the mass at some point or another. I have seen it initiated by the priest for performances by a choir, or even during baptisms and First Holy Communion. The worse abuse of this is a priest in Kissimme Fl. who claps on the altar to the tune of the music, he is very rythic and he actually dances and claps on the altar, it would be amusing watching it in some protestant service, maybe, but I felt cheated when i attended mass there. This has always been a thorn in my side, I am going to "borrow" Nihils image as I have mentioned this numerous times and people look at me as if I am either just weird or maybe crazy.

My priest had a clap fiesta today. Towards the end of Mass, before the final blessing, he showed us all his sun hat made out of palms and placed it on his head. He kept making everyone laugh, and then the clap party started. It was more like a short comedy stand up routine than a Mass. All attention was on him, not God. After reading this thread out earlier, the whole situation really got me upset. Prayers for our priests..

Really underscores the concept that since we have such greater than average knowledge of our faith, that our responsibility is thus magnified. As our responsibilities increase, so too does our suffering when we see the amount of sin within our stainless Church. The more responsibility we take on, the more we are called to love, and demand reverence, and inspire our brethren to greater Faith, and the more of this we experience, the more keenly we will suffer... mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.

I do remember one time where I actually did clap in mass. It wasn't for human achievement. It was after a homily. The parish I was attending was having a lot of issues with a liberal priest and liturgical abuses, etc. Well, a new priest came in. In one of his first homilies, he just totally went hardcore about ending the liturgical abuses, promoting confession, starting adoration at the parish, etc. After the homily, the congregation started clapping--me included. I don't think it was innapropriate at that moment. I don't think we were really praising any human achievement, but showing support and agreement with the things he said needed to be done.
Why hasn't anybody commented on if they agree with me on this or not? I need support or denouncement. I'll take either.

I think I've been clear enough.

I think you need to rethink why you think that.
