Can a bus from here treavel 1,000 miles?
I guess technically I could take a bus there. Oh, torture.
But then I have to find a way to make it to school at 7 every morning, so as to be disposed to reign properly over my 8 yr old subjects.

I like mopeds.

Actually it is too far and spread out for a me-powered bike ... if I tried I'd probably die, but I'd die with super-defined calf muscles - so that's something right?

I graduated in January, and I have a well-paying (35,000) job lined up for June (teaching elementary school)
Unfortunately its 1,000 miles away, so no more bumming rides off my sister, friends, and parents. I need a car.
I have my eye on a 2007 Hyundai Accent .. $7998 sticker price. I have $2000 for the down payment.

The problem is, I don't have 'proof of income.' I currently work for an agency as an on-call nanny, making 150-300 a week. But they give me temp, all-cash jobs - no pay stub. One of the most embarrassing moments of my life: I went to the credit union, and the loan officer told me "we'd never get you approved." agggggggh.

Seriously? Never? Even though I have a 765 credit score and a credit-worthy co-signer, if necessary?

Yup. Apparently I need a car to start my job, but need to start my job to get a car.

I know I can't be the only one in this situation - lots of people graduate school with this gap. And lo and behold I see a lot of car companies have programs for new graduates ... the problem is, they are all on brand-spanking new cars. I do NOT want a brand new car - because they are a huge financial loss and I'd be upside down on a loan almost immediately. And frankly I don't want to finance through a dealer either - they are caching. Credit unions and even the bank are much cheaper.

So what do I do.

Are these really my only options?

I wish I knew more about how life works.

You are a wise and kind-hearted soul. Therefore I shall give you six-thousand (hassan) dollars for each year I have spent enjoying your insightful posts. This totals to Eighteen-thousand (Hassan) dollars (I rounded up you luck duck). While this is not *technically* legal US tender it's basically the same thing.

Groo the Wanderer

Get dealer financing - tote the note - so to speak. They will finance you as long as you keep up with the payments, which may be weekly, bi weekly, or monthly. The first few may need to be in cash or money order.

note: do not miss a payment or even be late or they WILL repo the car. You then have to pay a fee to get it back....towing expenses and such.

or do the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace thing: get a $2000 car and when you have saved more, trade up. This would be my plan of choice

I heard someone talking about this kind of thing a while back:

"I need a doctor for my pressure pills, I need a lawyer for my medical bills, I need a banker to finance my home, but I need security to back my loan. It isn't new what I'm goin' through, but everybody knows you gotta break sometime. Another night I fought the good fight, but I'm getting close to the borderline."

Thanks TB!!! And everyone!

I know for sure I'm not going to buy a $2,000 dollar car.

My family has owned three $2000 dollar cars, bought for cash. Each one lasted about a year before it needed a major repair that was more than the car was worth. That was fine when we were all together, and could rely on each other for a quick ride to school or work.

But nooo way this time. Me, single young woman, living alone, amongst cows and corn, 1000 miles from my nearest friend ... without a reliable car. Wondering every day if this is the morning I won't get to work. Nah. I'd rather pay the dealers 9% interest rate.

Or brush the cobwebs outta my bike.

p.s. rural Oklahoma. cows and corn - no public transit.

I bike 10-15 miles a day basically every day minimum - sometimes more. My calves and thighs are huge but it's all muscle. LOL.

I must have been lucky. I bought my very first car for $2300 in 2005 from a side dealer (not major; auction cars were his specialty). It has had no major problems to this day. It's an old lady car, though (Buick). :)

So update y'all.
Got my car - I negotiated hard, walked away once, got $1500 taken off the top. It felt horrible and unladylike but I got what I wanted!
My sister was going to co-sign for me, but it turned out I was able to get a loan all on my own.

Yay for hatchbacks!!!!
