Socrates
Both stink... but I am moved to point out that Earth Day is not really a left wing thing. It's pretty mainstream. Seriously. Recycling is not a poltical act.
I'd beg to differ about the letter having nothing to do with political activism, but in any case . . . How is giving secular sermons on global warming and environmentalism at the behest of lefty celebrity activists (most of them not Catholic) not conflating Catholicism with the political left, while opposing such is conflating Catholicism with the political right? And I've got nothing against recycling or cleaning up parks. But it has no place as the subject of a sermon during the most Holy Week of the Catholic Faith. People can hear about recycling at plenty of other places. The focus during Holy Week should be on the Passion, Death, and Resurrection, of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and its relation to our own life, death, and redemption - not on trendy secular hot-topics (be they "left," "right," or "mainstream"). If saying that is conflation of Catholic orthodoxy with the American political right, then I proudly stand guilty as charged.
