Then try explaining how you're discerning priesthood yet taking a man to prom.
One word: sarcasm.
I question whether going to the Prom at all is a goodl. Where did the custom of having Proms originate anyway? What is ultimately the purpose of a prom? Since you go to a public school I doubt the whole atmosphere is going to be very modest, certainly it is not going to be a square dance or a waltz, LOL. I am not saying it would be a sin for you to go, I remember how hard it was to keep my faith in high school, but I think as faithful Catholics we have to challenge some of these customs that are oh-so "essential" in our culture. I mean why is it that faithful Catholics get married in a Mass and then within three hours people are on the dancefloor at the reception dancing to AC/DC and Sir Mixalot. (This happened at one of my friend's weddings and a lot of the people, supposedly faithful Catholics as well were out on the dance floor.) Check out some of these books on courtship and marriage and then see what you think. They were not written too long ago basically 1920-1950: http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/index.php?showtopic=112951&pid=2244556&st=0&#entry2244556 They illustrate how low our culture as fallen.
Of course prom is good! The purpose (at least mine and my friends') is to celebrate 4 years of hard work and the beginning of a new stage in life (college). Also, I think it's nice to treat myself to elegance for once in my life lol. The dress, limo, fancy dinner, friends. Ironically, proms tend to be much more modest than other dances, because many formal dresses are less revealing than semi-formal dresses and don't allow for the same type of gross dancing that goes on at homecoming dances and the like. Also, my friends and I just like to have a good, clean time. I don't see the problem with dancing to secular music. Not all of it is bad, there are a lot of decent dance songs out there that are about just that- dancing. Hahaha. You don't have to tell me twice about how our culture has fallen with respect to relationships and intimacy. Personally, I've never been in a relationship, mostly because I take those things more seriously than most people my age, and it's hard to find someone who shares my Catholic beliefs on dating. That's ultimately why I chose a friend to go with to prom, so it's more like he's going to hang out with his friends, I with mine. :D
RashaLampa
Ok, sounds like you have a good head on your shoulders. I believe that St. Francis De Sales in his book Introduction to the Devout Life advises about how to act at dances and whatnot, you might want to check that out. Good reading. St. Francis De Sales was a little more lay-oriented than other saints who were spiritual directors.
