Well I May Not Be Getting A Full Paycheck On The 15Th

In less than 26 hours, the U.S. Government may shut down due to disagreements over the fiscal year's budget. If they can't reach an agreement by midnight on Friday (night), then I won't be receiving a paycheck on the 15th (U.S. Army). This is going to hurt a lot of military families, not to mention DoD civilians who depend on the government for their paychecks as well. Funny thing is, we will still be required to show up for work since we are still "earning" our pay, just not receiving it on time.

Note: Rumor has it that we'll receive half of our 15th pay, on the 8th.

That happened once to me in Oklahoma. We didn't work for the state, but had a state contract, so we were actually paid even later because state workers got paid first. It made the newspapers of course, and I had little old ladies at church trying to give me groceries.

Yeah, this whole thing smells of elderberries. I hadn't heard the rumor about the 8th... I'm not going to put much stock in it, but I'll check my bank account. Luckily we have savings we can rely on to pay our bills until we get paid (we'll get it, just not on time)... but not everyone is in that position. I feel badly for those people, they'll be hurting come the 15th if we don't get paid. I'm praying for them.

I've heard that military personel are going to start getting paid every two weeks rather than monthly.

Who knows but I'd expect them to figure something out. Troops going without pay while we're engaged in three wars is a political clusterfloopy that's going to burn any political party that is seen as being responsible.

Of course, the extremists on both sides are hoping that the other side is going to be blamed for a government shutdown.

Paladin its a shame the President promised to veto the Republican passed stopgap bill that would fund the government for a week and the military for the rest of the year. The Republicans want to cut 60 billion dollars from the 1.3 trillion dollar budget proposed by the democrats, this cut is like 3% of their budget and they claim they can not do without this paltry sum, which is supposedly the equivalent of the average Ameican taxpayers having to cut one dollar from his/her budget over the course of a year! The democrats are gearing up for the next election and are hoping they can paint the republicans as wreckless fools robbing the government of monies needed to run the country. The democrat budget has so much pork in it its amazing they have not had to put a warning label on it, "Caution high fat may lead to heart attacks "

Usually these government shutdowns do not last, there were several under Clinton as well as both the Bush' administrations, problem is this president has already unconstitutionally omitted a budget since it was supposed to be enacted last fall. This is the first time we have ever had a President ignore so many constitutional mandates required of his office. He also seems to be the most military unfriendly President we have ever had. I would not care, but the military is the only part of the government machine that truly deserves every penny they are paid, and in reality much more.

Now who is going to ask the big questions? Anyone?

The big question is, who decides who is essential and who isn't? There is a war going on. Who is playing politics on this issue?

And there's what I mean.

Both sides are calculating that the partisans will manage to convince non-partisan voters that the other side is to blame. Open up the NYT op-ed page and see everything the republicans have been doing to obstruct. Partisans on both sides are absolutely convinced on the sanctity of their own side. Sadly this mutual self-rightousness and short term political calculations are causing hard working people pain.

I feel for you. My husband is a DoD civilian and we rely on his paychecks. We have a small baby to take care of, I stay home with him, and my husband's is our only income. We're not well off enough to be able to "not worry" about him not getting paid.

Prayers for you and all involved - let's hope and pray it comes to a happy conclusion, and soon. :amen:

Um, we do get paid every two weeks. Twice a month, on the 1st and 15th. (or was that comment just facetious?)

Brother Adam

This is a great reason for military families (and everyone) to get an emergency fund started (ala Dave Ramsey). Even if you can only put $5.00 away a week, try to get to $1,000 as fast as you can. That will help you withstand government shut downs. Then try to get to 6 months of your costs of living, which will help you shoulder any future unemployment, until benefits may kick in.

Yeah, LES's are out. We're getting half a paycheck on the 15th. It feels stupid to be grateful for getting half instead of nothing. I'd rather be paid the full amount due. And yet I am still glad to be getting something so I won't have to dip into savings (or at least not as much as I would have had to do if we got nothing). <_<

My brother in law will most likely be furloughed if nothing is resolved. I feel bad for them. My sister (his wife) is also a gov employee. So is my younger brother. And I have another brother who is in the Marines. This hits our family pretty hard. And I know it's hitting others even worse.

From what I hear, a big issue is that the bill or budget or whatever that Obama's proposing has earmarks for Planned Parenthood in it, and there are many who are still fighting for PP to be defunded. (I heard it from a teacher of mine.. so I'm not completely sure if this is total truth) It's a lose-lose situation.. if the plan is agreed upon, then Planned Parenthood stays funded. If it's not, the government shuts down and military families and such will be hurt. Yikes.

I believe that the problem is not that Obama's proposing earmarks for PP, but that the GOP is adamant on cutting all funding to PP from the budget.

In the old days, when money came up short, the enlisted men got paid first, before the officers, when the money finally came in.

And cutting funding to PP is a bad thing?

There is obviously blame on both sides of this issue, but I blame Obama for one specific thing in all this: a bill was proposed to guarantee pay and before it even went up to vote he threatened to veto it. A lot of suffering could have been avoided and he shot it down before it had a chance. That's how much Obama cares about the millions of military and hundreds of thousands gov employees.
