Era Might
In an effort to preserve the English language from the encroaching abominations forced upon it (the Oxford English Dictionary recently added "LOL"), I intend to document the English language as it was known and spoken in the twilight of its life, the 1990s. To this end, I will begin a series of definitions to preserve lesser known meanings of words that have fallen into general disrepair. Our first entry is the word "diss." Today, to "diss" someone is still vaguely remembered as a verbal insult. As in, "He be dissin' on you son." But a lesser known, still etymologically important, nuance of the word, in general usage during the 1990s, allows it to be used to describe an act of abandonment by one friend to another. For example, if two friends are hanging out, and another person comes along and invites one of the friends to hang out with him, and that friend goes with the other person, thus abandoning the friend he was originally hanging out with, then that original friend has been "dissed": not meaning he has been the victim of a verbal insult, but that he has been abandoned by his friend in favor of another friend. As in, "Oh man you're gonna diss me like that?" Future entries will include such relics of the English language as "syke," "on dogs," and "herb" (pronounced with an audible "h"). Luigi
Diss - etymology: "disrespect", originally a verb, converted to a noun, and clipped.
