Chamomile
I read recently something a priest had written on his blog about the Extraordinary Form of the Mass being offered in the vernacular. He said that this would be in accordance with the 2nd Vatican Council's call for a revised (or renewed? I don't remember the exact term) liturgy. So this made me wonder what exactly did Vatican II call for in regards to a revised liturgy? Did it specifically call for a new calendar, readings, etc? From what I know, the Council definitely didn't call for vernacular to be used, but merely allowed it. What do the documents say? Does anyone have links to these things? What sort of binding force do these documents and statements have and what does that mean for the current forms of the Mass? I ask this because I can see it as an argument someone might pose to me, since I prefer to go to the EF Mass. E.g. - "You shouldn't support something that Vatican II said needs to be changed. Doing so is going against the Church." I haven't read Summorum Pontificum, but I understand that it allows for, basically, the free use of the ancient form of the Mass.... so if the Pope issued this, it couldn't be at odds with something at Vatican II that had the effect of saying the ancient form could no longer be celebrated unless it was revised. So I think that would annul that theoretical argument about the EF Mass not being relevant since Vatican II said it had to be reformed (this argument is only in my head!), but I'd like to understand what the priest meant by his statement on his blog. As the liturgy can and does change, I know that the Tridentine Mass could possibly change, but I'd like to get the specifics on exactly what kind of change the 2nd Vatican Council was trying to encourage. Thanks & God bless!
Theoketos
Cripes! you need to read the document on the Liturgy from Vatican II http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_const_19631204_sacrosanctum-concilium_en.html Second, celebrating the EF in something other than Latin is illict. Third, allowing for the EF is the fruit of Vatican II. His Holiness was at the council and had a tremendous influence on it.
