Has anyone stayed in Rome at a free convent or monastery? I've heard of a few that are "donation-only" but the only ones I can find online are 30 Euros or more (which I know is super cheap!).

Note the ample space beside that staircase.

I've stayed with the Resurrectionist sisters and the Pallotine sisters. The Pallotines are closer to Vatican City; they provide breakfast only (bread/rolls with butter & jelly, plus coffee/tea). The Resurrectionists provided three meals a day, and you could take your lunch with you if you couldn't be in the building at lunch time. You could still walk to Vatican City, but it was a good six or eight blocks away. Both had a fairly early curfew - 10 p.m. I think. Both were clean, quiet, comfortable, and safe, but not fancy. Neither was free or 'donation only' but were in the ~E30 range you mention.

As I understand it, JPII passed an ordinance(?) that orders couldn't sell their property unless it was to another order. As a result, many are stuck with large buildings that they almost can't afford to maintain. So they've gone to renting our rooms to pilgrims -they earn money, they minister to Catholics in need, and the pilgrims get clean-quiet-comfortable-safe-but-not-fancy at a reasonable rate.

Sorry, can't help you there!

When I visited Rome, we stayed at the Residenza Madre Pie (http://www.residenzamadripie.it/Roma/English/Default.htm) which is very close to St. Peter's. It is run by religious Sisters and was one of the best parts of staying in Rome. The water is clean, and for its close proximity and the fact that they have a chapel there, it was worth the price, which is probably pretty high in these days (I know it was much less expensive when we went).

I know the Gregorian or the North American College will often house seminarians for free. Maybe you could get in touch with a seminarian you might know, and they could direct you to a resource?
