Debra Little
Why are people so offended by the Catholic Bible and why do they say that the Apocrypha is not inspired?
Brother Adam
Their offense is more likely with the Catholic faith itself, especially the authority it claims, and thus their dislike of the Catholic Bible is ancillary to that. Regarding the Old Testament Apocrypha (in scholarly terms there is a New Testament Apocrypha which all Catholics and Protestants agree is inspired) there is a complex history behind the development of the biblical canon and its closure in the Church. I recommend Henry Graham's "How We Got the Bible" for a reasonable, short, and non-scholarly look at its development. It is available online for free. You can also find shorter accounts in the Catholic Encyclopedia, but they are not as easy to read. Hopefully some other scholars can point you to more accessible sources.
