dominicansoul
I've noticed on phatmass, the Dominicans rule, and the Carmelites come in a distant second ...but why are all the Franciscans so quiet? Please let me know if you have a devotion to St. Francis, and state why. There might be a gift in it for you!!!
dUSt
I was once told by a Franciscan monk that Dominicans may be smarter, but Franciscans are more holy.

dominicansoul
to be honest, i started this thread with the hopes of finding a real devotee..someone who has immense zeal for St. Francis and the Franciscan spirituality...because...I want to give a true Franciscan a special gift for Lent... I'll let you Franciscans talk about why you love him sooo much, and at the end of the week, when I peek in here on Sunday (cos my Lenten fast from phatmass is lifted on Sunday,) I'll read the submissions and pray who I should give the gift to. Thanx

TradMom
+Praised be Jesus Christ! I DO! I could give you a thousand "real" theological reasons, but the truth is that when I went to Assisi for the first time - I felt my Faith just come alive. When I saw his tattered robe with his blood stains from his stigmata - I could only stand in there - in praise and thanksgiving that Francis answered the call to "Rebuild the Church." I believe that in his followers, this work is still going on. Pax, TradMom Edited March 8, 2011 by TradMom

Piccoli Fiori JMJ
+JMJ
I'd imagine that FutureNunJMJ has a devotion to St. Francis...
You would think, huh? I've actually been thinking about this recently due to a 'brief' essay that I've been asked to complete... I think I'm drawn to Holy Father Francis through St. Clare, his little plant. Like TradMom said, Assisi today is a beautiful town. I've been blessed to be able to visit twice. I even had a little orange cat accompany me on my way to San Damiano. Praying in the chapel where St. Francis is buried was deeply moving and I was in awe that this little poor man who lived so foolishly (according to the world) was the very support of the church and has left an amazing impact on the world! A Lutheran friend of mine even adores St. Francis! St. Clare too is a powerhouse! I am in awe of her virtue and courage. Francis seems like a very rustic and down to earth man. He was able to see the intricacies of the world around him, and there was the very fingerprint of God! He never studied, but God gave Him the knowledge he needed to bring others to Christ. He relied on God for everything! He lived on Divine Providence to his death! He abandoned everything to live as Christ lived. He sought to not just live, but walk and breath the Gospel. I've been trying to read more of his writing, as I have found a beauty within them that lifts my soul to Heaven. The Little Flowers of St. Francis was wonderful as well. Perfect Joy is the one that sticks out the most. His courage to live so courageously for Christ is so contagious! There are many bold Franciscan Saints. Although he seems too unreachable with his extreme penance and prayer, he is still down-to-earth. He found himself to be unworthy of any praise or glory, but instead all was for Christ. My thoughts on all this are still a little disorganized and not completely uncovered. I also do not know as much as I perhaps should, but I am looking forward to coming to better know and understand the Franciscan spirituality in the monastery. I know that I am drawn to the Franciscan charism because of Holy Poverty. That was one of the things that I felt wasn't quite right when I visited the Dominicans. Through this attraction to Holy Poverty, I've come to learn more about what it means to be Franciscan... and Our Lady has a very special place in the heart of any Franciscan. Livin_the_MASS
I have a great devotion to St.Maximilian Kolbe and St. Louis de Montfort. St. Maximilian was a Franciscan. He Followed St. Francis love of Poverty. "I want to follow the life of poverty of our most high Lord Jesus Christ and of his holy Mother." (St. Francis of Assisi). The more I read about St. Maximilian Kolbe the more I learn about St. Francis, which he also had devotion to Our Lady. So my devotion to him is increasing the more I learn! "The Salute to the Virgin and his (St. Francis) Salute to the Virtues are interchangeable. To salute the Virgin is to salute the virtues; and to salute the virtures of wisdom, poverty and charity is to salute the Virgin Mother of Incarnate Wisdom in the poor stable of Bethlehem willing to offer Her Child for the sake of sinners." AudreyGrace
I LOVE SAINT FRANCIS! (and St. Clare, for that matter). I mean, I AM going to Franciscan University this fall, and I hope to be a 3rd order when I grow up He appreciated nature and saw God's good love in everything that was alive. One of the many reasons I love love love him. St. Francis genuinely put everything and everyone before him. He even moved a worm to the side of the road so it wouldn't get crushed by passers-by. Humility like that is astounding. and so much more.
ThePenciledOne
I go to Franciscan University.....haha I would like to say that I have a devotion to St. Francis, but I have yet to read St. Bonaventure "Life of St. Francis of Assisi" to really start it. My spirituality does conform more to the Franciscans then any other order I have found thus far. I am currently taking a class on Franciscan Traditions, which is a philosophy class specifically on the Franciscan philosophy of Bonaventure, Scotus, and William of Ockham. And we have just gotten to Scotus and I am finding out that Franciscan thought just makes sense. Plus, I love all the friars here.
