kafka
Starring Ioan Gruffudd, Romala Garai In 1797, William Wilberforce, the great crusader for the British abolition of slavery, is taking a vacation for his health even while he is sicker at heart for his frustrated cause. However, meeting the charming Barbara Spooner, Wilberforce finds a soulmate to share the story of his struggle. With few allies such as his mentor, John Newton, a slave ship captain turned repentant priest who penned the great hymn, "Amazing Grace," Prime William Pitt, and Olaudah Equiano, the erudite former slave turned author, Wilberforce fruitlessly fights both public indifference and moneyed opposition determined to keep their exploitation safe. Nevertheless, Wilberforce finds the inspiration in newfound love to rejuvenate the fight with new ideas that would lead to a great victory for social justice. This was a beautiful movie. All about God, morality, the horrors of the slave trade, how one gets crucified for doing good in the world, and the healing power of love. Excellent array of English actors. Good humor, good cinematography. Though I dont know how men and women could have worn those whigs in that time period. Talk about vanity

tinytherese
I remember seeing the film years ago with my mom (and eventually got the DVD,) and afterwards thought about the pro-life movement. Who knows, maybe the same thing could happen here.
sarcasmguy126
Oh, yes.... ....I remember seeing this film years ago in the theater with my dad and brothers. Then I bought it when it came out on DVD. It's been several years since I last saw it, but I recall that it was very powerful and moving. Responding to this blog makes me interested in watching it again. William Wilberforce was truly an unsung hero, and Gruffudd portrayed him remarkably well!
