Not Something You See Everyday

Around 10AM this morning I looked out my window to see about a dozen cop cars, police men with vests and really big guns, swat shields, and police dogs in our back parking lot. I looked out a bit further to see past the big field and saw tons of children walking down the street-- likely evacuating from the school that is kitty-corner from my parish.

It's not unusual for the police to use our back parking lot as a meeting and briefing place for operations, but they generally call ahead of time to let us know.

And it's strange that the kids would be evacuated from the school... don't school usually go into lock-down if there's danger?

Either way... definitely not something you see everyday.

If there was a bomb threat or something like that they'd want to evacuate. Or if something major was going on very close by.

I've woken up twice to see police tape and CSI guys in white paper suits outside my bedroom window. Makes for a great start to the morning. No need for caffeine when you get an adrenalin jump like that.

I always thought evacuations, drills, and all the environmental hazard stuff was fun. If you don't know the pleasure of standing outside of a school on a hot day when an icecream cartman comes by... well... I don't know how to explain it.

In my grade twelve year of high school (almost two years ago) the school was locked down for about 5 or 6 hours. During 4 of those I was locked in a room barely larger than a closet, in the pitch dark. Then we got escorted into a safe perimeter inside the school by the tactical unit, guns drawn, some pointed at us, barricades set up all down our hallways.
During a nearly apocalyptic blizzard.

It was fun.

I'm from a time before lock-downs. We did evacuate once. The Church was on fire, and it connected to the school through the cafeteria.
