Preparation For Holy Communion

This is going to sound a tad cynical, but the people who are neglecting prayer before and after Mass are probably not on phatmass. Fortunately, they are showing up to Mass, and I think the one thing you can do to encourage them is by simply praying, especially after Mass. Even if it's just a couple minutes, you're bearing witness to God's Presence and some people will notice that, even though they probably won't let you know it (or maybe they make fun of you a bit, which is a safe way of letting you know they noticed).

As for any specific prayers... being a fulfilled Evangelical, there are some prayers I find helpful, especially from the St. Joseph 1962 Missal, but generally I prefer a more "open response" style where I simply adore Christ, especially while gazing upon the Crucifix, and tell Him whatever is on my heart -- or just be silent before Him. Sometimes kneeling is all the prayer that's necessary.

Anyone could stumble across this site! Or this thread! And not everyone does the same thing for preparation for receiving Holy Communion, so for those of us here who do make some effort, I think it's interesting to share...

Some people do seem to get upset if you don't talk to them right after Mass. And I've had people try to grab me and start talking even before I get a chance to kneel, when they know that's what I do :o But yes, I hope some people might realize I'm doing that not to ignore them or look holy but to adore God.

Sister Marie

My favorite prayer after receiving Jesus in the Eucharist is the renewal of my vows. When I come back to my pew after receiving Jesus in the Eucharist I put my head into my hands and renew the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience that I made at my profession in the hope that I might be given the grace to live out the total self-gift of Jesus in the Eucharist through my vowed, consecrated religious life. It is the greatest gift in my life.

I like that very much. :smile2: I will do that if I ever become a Sister. :)

It feels heartless to read a formal prayer, to me, at that time. I try to keep it short and from the heart. I like to apologize for past sins, faults and failings, and offer up Communion for relief of the temporal punishment of past sins, and for the salvation and sanctification of my soul. I tell Jesus I love Him many times, and thank Him. I also always offer up Communion to the Blessed Virgin ever since my consecration to Mary in 2008 (an FI Sister recommended this as part of my consecration to Mary).

As far as meditation, even though it's difficult with my ADHD and distractability, I try to be in a loving and joyful disposition, and just think how I'm about to receive Jesus in such a Mystery, how He died for me, and how much He loves me. I also try to meditate on the Communion music, which is very traditional and prayerful where I usually go.

You and I are very alike. I, too, have trouble with concentration because of ADD, but I do the best I can. Yesterday, I decided to add a new part to my prayer before Communion which was:

I ask for forgiveness for any sins I have committed, especially those in which I ignored my Christian duty.

This Lent was a time of working on being less lazy in my home life, which I still feel needs a lot of work, and I owe my parents for allowing me to stay at home even though I don't pay rent and I don't have a job (yet, I am currently looking since school is out for the summer). I could definitely help out more doing chores and cleaning. I also have a tough time with stubbornness.

:hehe2: How do we confuse you?

Mater, I'm happy to say I've been doing little odd jobs for friends and saving up for my eventual plain trip to the SsEW! I'm quite excited.

It used to get me so frustrated that my mind would wander so much. I worried it would keep me from ever growing into contemplation and deeper prayer. But my spiritual director said something beautiful about this. They said to trust that God would compensate. I can see I've grown in many ways over the last year in particular. I wouldn't say prayer so much, but fruits in general. God is a w esome. :smile2: Edited by JoyfulLife

For me it's difficult to have a "spare moment" to fully focus myself before mass. We have 3 masses a weekend but regardless of when I go, because I am the most accessible of parish staff, something always comes up for me to take care of. Because of this I take the silent prayer moments of mass very seriously. In those moments I try to focus myself on why I am at mass and to the intentions that my friends, family and parishioners ask me to take to mass. During the Consecration I pray "Body of Christ save me, Soul of Christ sanctify me." and "Blood of Christ inebriate me, Passion of Christ, strengthen me." Then after receiving Holy Eucharist CttC and I pray the Anima Christi together. If I have a chance after mass I give God the rest of my thanksgiving and pray the St. Michael the Archangel prayer.

God bless-

I hear ya. It's tough going to Mass at the parish where you work. Taking care of things, answering questions, everyone just wants to chit-chat (and doesn't mind interrupting your prayer to do so)...

I've tried to get into the practice of going to a vigil Mass elsewhere and then be "available" during the Masses at my parish on Sundays.
