Archaeology cat
Pregnancy can be considered a serious health condition (or at least situation?), can't it? Pregnant women have to eat right, sleep enough, go to the doctor, get images made, be measured, all kinds of things - just like folks with lots of other serious health conditions. Your family isn't so weird - they just see the similiarities.
Normal pregnancy is not a health condition. And I'll stop there before I start ranting on and on about it. Also, continue to drink, smoke and take all the illegal drugs you wish to take. Nothing bad will happen to the baby. Janice

Luigi
I believe we've hijacked Lilllabett's thread. If I started it, I apologize. I believe we may also have given the - COMPLETELY FALSE - impression that Lilllabett herself is pregnant? And I apologize for that, too. But you still haven't told us, Lilllabett, what the good news IS!

Janice
Pregnancy is not a disease and should not be treated as such. The tests & checks often done in the US aren't necessary for every pregnancy (I'm speaking of the glucose tolerance test, which gives many false positives, and internal checks, which don't give meaningful information and introduce a risk of infection). Good nutrition is important pregnant or not, and doesn't make pregnancy a medical condition. Now, there are women who should be more closely monitored, such as those who have a risk of diabetes, or those with high blood pressure, but for the vast majority of women, it is not a medical issue. Yes, I had midwives with me at birth, because there are possibilities that something can go wrong and I therefore wanted a trained person with me who knew what to do in that case. But I did not have them do anything to me, just be with me, because intervention wasn't necessary.

Pregnant women have to change how the eat, sleep, and live. Medical condition doesn't mean it's a negative. Most people are very excited about having children. Phatmass: Common sense, an uncommon virtue.

Today, in the U.S., it is rare to have a woman die in childbirth, but it is not the case in all countries and for all times. Today, in the U.S., more children survive childbirth than don't, but it is not the same for all nations nor throughout all of history. We are blessed that doctors have learned so much to help pregnant woman and their offspring survive. Janice
