OnlySunshine
Has anyone tried the fermented honey drink called "mead"? I saw a few different versions of it at a health food market and wondered what it tasted like. There was regular mead, blackberry mead (which sounded interesting), and elderberry mead. Does it taste just like regular honey or is it a little different because of the aging process?

sixpence
I just made some mead a few months ago!!!! I have bees, so I used my own honey, and I took it to a place where you can make beer/wine... and ta dah.. I like mead very much, you need to be careful though since the alcohol content is generally higher than wine!!! It usually tastes very much like the honey you use for it, i like wildflower and black current mead the best! And mead can vary greatly, just like wine- some is very "honeyish", others not as much I like the fruit derived ones (called melomels actually )
YMNolan
I'd like to try it. Is it available in grocery stores?
Luigi
I had some mead once, in Ireland. It was dog-awful! YUCK! BBLLECCCHHHHH! Spit & rinse, then repeat! Can you tell I'm not fond of sweet wines? As I said, I had some mead once.... and that was more than enough.
Lisa
There are actually semi-dry (probably even dry, too) meads. So you don't have to be a sweet wine person. Oliver Winery has a mead that's in a lot of grocery stores.

I don't think there is a high demand for mead so most stores probably won't carry it. I'd check with a regular liquor store, if they don't have it they can probably order it for you. I tried it once, a friend gave us a bottle for a wedding gift (she had been to Ireland and brought it back for us). It was a little dry but extremely sweet. Like alcoholic honey. I wound up cooking with it because I couldn't bear to drink it straight.
OnlySunshine
I don't think I'll be trying this anytime soon, I guess. I cannot stand sweet drinks (I don't even drink Coca-Cola or other sodas anymore).
