CatherineM
We all hope that we are never faced with that choice, but you are right, you are allowed to use deadly forced to protect yourself, or a family member, or even another innocent person. In that case we would say you were forced to kill, but it would not be called murder.
Theoketos
To clarify by distinction: Killing an innocent person is never justifiable. Killing an unjust aggressor might be justifiiable if; You have the authority to do it, you have a just cause, right intention (acting out of charity and not hate), killing the person would bring about more good than evil, you have a reasonable hope of success, and most importantly it is the last resort. Finally, martyrdom is always an option. What is it to gain the whole world or preserve your life, but lose your soul? Passivicism, like virginity, is the Eschatological ideal!
