OK, y'all, HopefulBride officially has dibs on In Conversation with God set. The Liturgy of the Hours, however, still has no takers.

This is tempting, but as I don't currently pray LOTH right now (and have never done it by myself), I'm thinking I should just start with Christian Prayer. Have any of you "jumped into" praying with the full set of books?

I spent 2 years praying the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary -- primarily the pre-conciliar version by Baronius Press but sometimes the updated Catholic Book Publishing Co LOBVM. I think this helped me jump into the 4-volume office, but the reality is, once you grasp the general structure of the prayers, it's not complicated at all. And as long as you have the Saint Joseph guide for the current year, you're all set, as it tells you which page your on for each hour.

Things I wish I'd known about the LOTH which would have caused me to start praying it earlier:

1) the readings and prayers tie into the daily Mass in a way that emphasizes one's continuous immersion in liturgical prayer through the day
2) The updated LOTH is much more concise than the pre-conciliar breviary. It used to take me 20 minutes in the morning to say Matins and 15 to say Lauds -- and the LOBVM is meant to be a shorter liturgical prayer used by laity and some sisters in active orders. Praying the LOTH in the morning requires 15 minutes for the Office of Readings (Matins) and 10 minutes for Morning Prayer (Lauds). Daytime hours take approximately 3 minutes, making it super-easy to pray all my hours through the day. I prayed a pre-conciliar version of the Divine Office translated into English, once, and it took me over 45 minutes to work through Matins alone!
3) The Office of Readings makes it worth jumping into the full LOTH right away. You don't get the Office of Readings in any of the shorter versions.
4) You will always know what feast day/ week in Ordinary time you're in
5) The CCC lists praying the LOTH as an "act of worship or devotion which revives the spirit of conversion and repentance within us and contributes to the forgiveness of our sins" (paragraph 1437)
