Nobody is looking for ghosts in those shows.

True, but Paranormal Activity was supposed to be a movie that was supposedly based on true stories...if they are true stories, there are some very bored demons lingering about.

Many good priests have written about the subject, so simply thinking about it doesn't *necessarily* put oneself at risk.
In fact I just got a lovely old book (with a Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur) about poltergeists and haunted houses, written by a Jesuit from the 50s.

Jesuits were still cool in the 50s, what book is that?

Everyday you open the door to your home, you're opening doors to evil. Don't worry about it - just live your life.

Movies are just movies, and TV shows are just TV shows.

I started a thread about this almost a year ago, I strongly feel that although these shows are offered as entertainment they place peoples minds on things they should not interest themselves in.

I feel that the shows on the TV will bring many more people looking for things like what they are watching on TV. I seen a show advertised about pyshic kids, the premise was these kids could contact spirits to "help them crossover or settle unfinished business" I beleive that any "souls" they may contact are evil in nature, we know we are to be judged when dead so what else does that leave to contact. The kid show was scary, their parents were there to fortify the kids beleif that they were seeing and helping lost souls. Think of the impressionable people who see this stuff and then buy a Ouija board or some tarot cards or maybe a book on the occult to learn how to draw a pentagram and hold a seance. This stuff is just a means to an end for the deceiver.

This.

I agree that dabbling with the occult is a huge no-no and I would never get involved with that sort of thing, but I don't really think there is that much harm in watching things like Ghost Hunters or Paranormal Activity. I even watch The Exorcism of Emily Rose occasionally. I'm not obsessed with the paranormal--I just watch them for the entertainment value. I've actually asked a pretty traditional priest if there was harm in watching them since I really don't believe in that sort of thing to begin with and he said as long as I understand that I am not supposed to communicate with any spirit by any occult method or paranormal method, then it is OK. But if I start to get to the point where it is all I watch, then I risk putting myself in danger.

Before my reversion in Dec 2007, I used to watch Ghost Hunters all the time. I can't remember a show that I missed as I would wait for it to be uploaded on hulu.com that evening. At the time, I really believed in it and I even tried to conduct my own EVP session--and failed miserably. Fortunately, nothing happened as a result of this experiment, but it just shows how little I knew about my faith. I don't watch Ghost Hunters that much anymore. There are a select few of my favorites like the time they filmed in the St. Augustine Lighthouse and the Leap Castle in Ireland, but it has gotten so phony the last few years.

Pretty much anything can be an occasion of sin if we let it. We need to have a healthy respect of the Catholic faith to really understand the spiritual side of things and not let it interfere with our relationship with Jesus Christ, but like I said before, movies are just entertainment, not truth. :)

"Ghosts and Poltergeists" by a Herbert Thurston, S.J..
I haven't read it yet, but I see no reason that it won't be good. :)

 • 2 months later...

I don't understand why anyone would even want to seek out evil spirits. Stupid bored college co-eds maybe. "lulz a ouija board!" idiots.
