Adrestia
The rolling outages have come through Galveston. I work on a medical campus, so they'll keep power on here at the expense of homes and non-medical businesses as long as possible. The outage had not reached my home before I came in to work this morning, and I'm sure power will be back on before I get home. When I lived in Georgia my home was right next to a hospice - we were supplied by the same branch of the power lines - so I never had to deal with brownouts (what we called the planned, rolling blackouts in MD) and my power was always among the first to be restored after a major event. I do remember a few brownouts in MD - one happened when the Chesapeake Bay froze - the ships that carried in heating oil couldn't reach the port. That groundhog claims we'll have an early Spring... it could not come early enough!
dominicansoul
my dad's had two of the power outages since they started rolling this morning. It lasted only 30 minutes both times, so, he's been doing fine. Thanx for prayers. Here at the university, the classes were cancelled due to the rolling power outages. My building remains open and free of outages. Can't figure out why....
dUSt
OK, I live close to Hughey, and I went to eat lunch with Paul, aka Apollo, aka DJ Paul Classic, aka P5C hypeman, aka J-Rock, aka the great white hope, aka DJ Robot Monster, and there was literally like 2 inches of solid ice on side roads and parking lots, with a negative degree windchill. The funny part is, on Sunday, it was 80 degrees outside and I was in shorts.

Sternhauser
it was below zero and windy last night, so our pipes froze. yay!
If you're out of power in sub-freezing temperatures, always turn on your faucets to keep the water flowing a tiny bit. As in, slightly above a drip. ~Sternhauser

Adrestia
Icy roads are the worst! In my youth I would drive out in any condition. It's a good thing that guardian angels are immortal, I might have given mine a heart attack. Now I bike to work on most days. The precipitation is supposed to hit us Thursday night. IcePrincessKRS
It's not going out on accident, they're doing it on purpose to try to lessen the strain on the grids. The outages are on purpose. Rolling blackouts means a controlled 15 minutes of outage at a time. Unfortunately, people have been without power for upwards of four hours now. Stinky.
Yeah, can't say I have ever experienced that.
i'll be down there in a month. by down there, i mean marietta. my parents haven't seen me since july. but...i'll be down where you live in august.
I might not be here in August. We're supposed to be traveling to visit family but I don't have exact dates yet.

incarnatewordsister
That's terrible, Sister. I'm so sorry. Many prayers.
Thanks. Please continue praying because people here do not know how to drive in this kind of weather, nor do we have the right tires. I'm guessing up north people have their tires changed? Classes have been cancelled for today and tomorrow and I believe the expressway will be closed too. In 2004 when it snowed in South Texas there were, many, many accidents and people died because we don't know how to drive in this weather. No salt in our streets, and well, I'm being repetitive.
