HopefulBride
BTW - before you start the jokes about what sissies we are in the south, try to empathize. We're looking at an inch of ice across surfaces, not snow. We're experiencing negative temperatures, which is, yes, different for a place that reaches up to 115 during the summer. We dropped over 60 degrees in 48 hours and have been suffering with closed roads, power issues, etc for two days now. Sigh.
I completely understand. I live in Florida and I while we have not had power loss we have had frozen pipes. Prayers. Edited February 2, 2011 by HopefulBride
CatherineM
We're right around freezing here, which is warm comparably. Two days ago it was -36. I have a feeling in a few years we are going to be really tired of weather extremes.
IcePrincessKRS
We have the power go out during bad storms (in any season), but never (in my recollection) a statewide blackout. Sometimes, depending on the power grid, one side of the street will have power and the other will not. (By "we" I mean where I grew up in NY, not here in the south where I currently live. lol)
fides quarens intellectum
wow. is it because most of the power lines there are above ground - is that's what's causing the outages?
Deus te Amat
Texas is a big state. I can't really comprehend how this is a statewide problem. We never have rolling blackouts in MN... FQI, basically, because of the cold weather, everyone is using more power than usual, and its taxing the electrical grid. As a result, they are shutting off power to differing areas of the grid for 15-45 minute periods (supposedly. our power was off for over 3 and a half hours, and it just came back on...). Luckily, hospitals and nursing homes are exempt, but it still makes me feel bad for the elderly...

Deus te Amat
yes, but if this happens repeatedly, I'm not looking forward to our electric bill, either. We have it set to 65, but when the heat came back on, room temperature was in the high 40s... Grr. It almost seems pointless because then the buildings have to use MORE electricity to bring the rooms back up to the desired temperature. But you know, I'm not really a science or math person or anything. I have zero common sense or logic skillz.
CatherineM
I also think this is going to expose some issues with the power grid. It is old, worn out, inadequate, and vulnerable.
The outages are on purpose. Rolling blackouts means a controlled 15 minutes of outage at a time. Unfortunately, people have been without power for upwards of four hours now. Stinky. My mom works at a hospital and they didn't have power this morning. They went to backup generators and could only use their "emergency" plugs. No computers, just the necessities. franciscanheart
It still smells of elderberries here. The power is on, which is nice, but the roads are still ridiculous. I'm praying this doesn't last through the night. For everyone's sake, this needs to let up now.

incarnatewordsister
It's terrible down here. People are having to go to shelters because we don't own enough clothes for winter. Our pipes don't hold. Our beautiful palm trees are not made for this kind of weather and our elderly, well, struggle in this kind of weather. Plus, a couple of years ago we were the poorest area in the United States. Many people do not have heating or heaters.
