regina_coeli
Henchman are more versatile-- I'd like a henchman! But if the recruiting is among young seminarians, a minion will have to do.
CatholicCid
If you have some old crutches, you can use them as oars with your wheelchair and speed down the hallways. Think of it as seminarian bowling.

Jaime
After being on my feet for over 6 years, I am now back in a wheelchair. This time, it's temporary until my leg heals, but it was supposed to be temporary last time too, and it ended up being 8 long years. I'm trying to stay positive. I'm trying to surrender to the wishes of my doctor and husband. We had like 6 feet of snow followed by a week of above freezing temps which led to lots of ice. That's what I slipped on. The ice is still here, so no one wants me venturing out on it. So my husband has arranged for the disabled public transit to take me to school. He doesn't drive, so that's my option. I am dreading the spectacle of showing up for classes on Tuesday in a wheelchair being brought by the mini-bus, that may or may not actually arrive on time. The classes are so packed, that I don't know where I'm going to park the thing. I don't want people making fusses over me. My Confessors and Spiritual Directors have told me many times that accepting help is good for me. I just really hate it. I almost started crying when I opened the box that had my wheelchair gloves in it. I kept them as a reminder, not because I thought I'd need them again. I'm just trying to endure this with some of my dignity intact.
You are always 10 feet tall in my eyes. Dignity isn't measured by height my friend, Its measured by character. And your cup overflows
Sarah147
You're going to turn down the offer of your own personal strapping young seminary lad to run menial errands, carry your books, wait on your every whim, and maybe act as an impromptu footstool??
I hope you feel better and that God brings much good out of all of this. Edited February 1, 2011 by JoyfulLife
Luigi
Catherine, Catherine, Catherine! You must be feeling sorry for yourself if you're turning down minions. I know you worked hard to achieve physical independence, but... at this point, you have the opportunity to introduce a whole class of seminarians to the world of disability. Let them minister to you (now) so that they remain aware (the rest of their lives) of the needs of people in wheelchairs, on crutches, etc. in their personal lives and in terms of running a parish. You're in a brand new building, right? So it probably has all the required handicapped access accommodations, but it will still be an object lesson in handicapped etiquette (the difference between actually helping and taking control or being a pest, for instance). May God bless and keep you always, May your wishes all come true, May you always do for others, And let others do for you. Independence, self-reliance, self-determination, perseverance - all are wonderful traits. But this could be such a teachable moment for so many. And if it makes you feel better, I give you permission to tip them if they do a good job.

CatherineM
Yes the new building appears to be wonderfully accessible. Auto opening doors, nice curb cuts, accessible bathrooms, but the doors to the actual classrooms are too narrow for my wheelchair. They are these high-tech, green technology. I'm hoping to thoroughly scuff up the new paint and doors to make a point. There's no ADA here, so accessibility can be hit or miss.
Winchester
A motor, winch and the proper rounds in a shotgun can make most any building wheelchair accessible.
CatherineM
The classroom door was big enough, but not the bathroom stall door. Getting wedged in a bathroom door is so much fun. Luckily I can stand up. I'd feel sorry for someone who couldn't. I know I use a bigger chair than normal, but it is pretty much as wide as the average power chair would be. CatherineM
The Handibus is something to experience. The lift tilts you in an uncomfortable direction. I was pretty sure that I was going to end up on my face on the sidewalk, but didn't. Then I got strapped in like I was going to on the space shuttle. I just tried to close my eyes, and think of England.

Ed Normile
Definetly will keep you in my prayers for a speedy recovery. I have to ask, are you now permanently four feet tall or is that how tall you are in the wheelchair, I am confused. I guess if you did not lose any leg it means you will be back to your former height eventually, by the way how big is that wheel chair anyway four feet tall seems like a big one too me. ed
