My dog just thinks they are something that needs a bath, so if they survive the shock of a dalmatian tongue washing they stick around. I've always had black cats, the best and most amazing was my Thomas's English Muffin.

Chamomile
Beautiful story, Iggy. God has blessed you with a deep love of His little, needy creatures, and you'll be blessed for taking such good care of them. After I read what you wrote, my cat came over to the side of the chair where I'm sitting and meowed and rubbed against my hand. So she says all cats think you're pretty amesome
We seem to have a permanent strain of black cats in the neighborhood, probably do the gigantic black tom who sits in my tree. If he's feral, there are organizations that help with trapping them and doing low-cost or free surgeries....

Mark of the Cross

As a cat lover I found your story very touching. All my cats were white by coincidence except for one tortoise shell cat that wasn't overly affectionate. But the three white cats were all angels. I don't care what anyone says, anything that can express love has a soul and so cats have a soul and you will see them again. 'The Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of life...' Everything that lives does so by the power of the Spirit of God. As for you Iggy you have a lot more soul than most people. Bless you.
I think it is a Budhist thing to think souls can be in animals. My understanding is that animals have animal "spirits" but not a human soul. It's a little degrading to say animals have souls, when Jesus came to die and save humans. It's humans He wants to have a deep relationship with, and to fill with His very Presence. I must say though that some animals seem so human, but I guess because everything good comes from God, so similarities. But... animals in Heaven. I wonder... In Peter Kreeft's book, "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Heaven..." he entertains the idea of animals in Heaven. He seems to think they will be in Heaven. I guess we'll see when we get there, by the grace of God.
Sarah147
I must say that when my cat was dying, it was soooo hard to picture that he'd die and go nowhere. He was so dear to me, and so baby-like, that I couldn't bare to think about that; it was like removing his life from ever existing in the first place. I can only hope he's gone to some place with God, but I guess we won't know for sure until we get there.
Mark of the Cross
I think it is a Budhist thing to think souls can be in animals. What are the Characteristics of a soul? 1/ Self awareness. Are animals self aware? Yes but probably not to the extent that we are. 2/ emotion-expressly love. Do animals love -yes most definitely. 3/ Free will. Do animals have free will? No they are instinct driven. So no, I don't think I said animals have human souls. Jesus will raise us up and bring us to heaven. Is heaven perfect? If something you love is not there, can it be perfect? He didn't say he would resurrect animals into new bodies but he did suggest he would gather them up to his care. [sup]Mat 10:29 [/sup] Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Nihil Obstat
St. Thomas' distinction says that animals have mortal souls, whereas humans have immortal souls.

Romans 8:20-23For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body. fides quarens intellectum
Sadly, adoption rates for black cats are dismal - the lowest of all colors of cats. They also have the highest euthanasia rate of cats at shelters
Really? I didn't know that! Our black cat is from a shelter. We have no idea what happened to her before we got her - i've never seen such a skittish scaredy cat, and I've been around cats all my life. We actually adopted her because we knew they'd put her down - they brought her out with another cat for us to "visit" and see if we liked them, then when the lady was putting her back in the little cage, she had scruffed her neck to pick her up, which made this cat very scared so she cried and hissed - they said that would be put down as an "incident," which we knew meant they'd put her down. Anyway, our black cat likes to hide - a lot - and she gets scared easily. Sometimes, just someone getting up from the couch suddenly is enough to scare her. If you approach her in her hiding place, she will hiss and/or growl in defense. It took her months just to come out and stay with us for a few hours, but of course, she's usually under a coffee table or behind a couch. I really like our odd black cat, though.
