reminiscere
How absolutely disugsting that (probably) Italian-Americans can find nothing better to post about in this thread than Hollywood stereotypes and mafia jokes. God forbid I start making jokes about Nazis in the German thread or drunks in the Irish thread or anything in the African-American thread (God forbid we have a Jewish thread). I would probably be warned/banned and my "ratings" drop immediately. But as far as Italians go ethnically like Catholicism on the religious level in the media and in every other arena, it's always open season. Anything's fair game. Italian-Americans have sadly and consistently perpetuated the mafia/spaghetti view of themselves and so have no one to blame but themselves for doing so - see Godfather, Sopranos and Jersey Shore for perfect examples - as well as the previous posts in this thread. As a proud grandson of Italian immigrants, a parishioner at one of the oldest Italian churches in this country and someone who knows very well the language and culture of Italy I am ashamed of fellow Italian-Americans who continue to degrade themselves all in the name of humor trying to become assimilated or accepted. Honestly, find something else to joke or talk about.... or try learning some more Italian besides "mangia" and "pizza." MithLuin
Actually...I posted a picture of a Nazi concentration camp in the Polish thread, and there have been plenty of comments about drinking in both the German and Irish threads. Part of being proud of a culture is to be aware of the shortcomings. I'm sorry you were offended by comments on this thread, but I'll also point out that some very wonderful Italian saints were listed here. To my knowledge, I do not have a drop of Italian blood in me, but Sts. Francis and Clare of Assisi are my favorite saints, and I have been to Rome to visit. All Catholics have a connection to Rome, and thus to Italy, and we'd be geniuses to forget that.

And I admit I get caught up in it, but I also feel as Italian-American's, we have our own culture apart of that of our ancestors. Both of my great great grandparents were right "off the boat", so to speak. But the truth is, as a fourth generation Italian-American, the full on Italian culture is hard to keep alive, and like i said, we have our own kind of "sub-culture" as Italian-Americans. My father still cooks a Sunday dinner, my whole family still uses a lot of Italian "slang" yet I am the only one who regularly attends Mass. I am the only "full-blooded" out of my all siblings (long story for another time) and since I am discerning a call to the priesthood, though it pains me to say it, the traditionalism of my family will continue to die out, as it has over the pasts 20 years or so. As for all the "stereotypes", well they exist and I cant defend them nor will I persecute them. Along with my love of God, and a loving family, they are all Ive got. I will tell you this though, I will and have been trying to get in touch with my more "Italian" side so that I may bring those traditions into my ministry, if and when I do become a priest. Come on, who doesn't like an Italian priest? hahahaha

It just isn't fair.
