Papist
From personal experience alcohol is way worse if abused. Hands down not even a question. And also marijuana can be smoked in moderation. Moderation for me is 1 or 2 times inhaling. I would not want anymore.
Absolutly!! Alcohol is probably the worse abused substance. Model glue is abused. Oil based paint is abused. Redi-Whip is abused. But people do use all these in a non-abusive way and without the intent to get high. I am not or never was a user of marijuana, but I don't know of a reason people use other than the intent to get high.

My grandfather drinks a Southern Comfort on the rocks every night. He's not getting buzzed, he's just enjoying his nightly cocktail. I usually drink just one glass and savor the flavor of what I am drinking whether that be wine or vodka. I sometimes do drink for a buzz, but that's not my primary goal every time I pick up a bottle. I would say inhaling marijuana a few times from a pipe would be the same as getting a buzz drinking a six pack of brew. The buzz is different but a good buzz as long as its done in moderation. I don't discuss people's smoking habits with them all that often, but I know far more people who can drink just one beer and be satisfied than I do people who will only smoke one cigarette or one or two puffs of weed. I'm not saying I think it should be illegal, necessarily, just highlighting that I am leery of it.
Adrestia
By "everything," I'm sure he meant "drugs." The context was "drugs." ~Sternhauser
SHE!! When I said make everything legal, I did mean drugs. Drug dealers don't really sell drugs, drugs sell themselves. Hard core addicts are going to find a fix at any cost - I'd rather that cost be less violent than it currently is. (I'd also rather criminals be paying taxes. Switching to the FairTax.org system would fix that problem without having to legalize their activities.) Legislating morality and common sense is tricky. I'd rather people just realize that smoking is dumb and stop doing it on their own. Think about it. When is it a good idea to put something that is on fire in your mouth to inhale the smoke? Why not run behind a bus to inhale the fumes?

Papist
It is a bit scrupulous. To drink to be drunk should be considered sinful, but a minor buzz ≠drunk. You're bringing in variables that were not mentioned in the article. In any case, expand more please.
I think possibly we are saying the same thing. I agree, buzz ≠drunk being that drunk ≠drunkeness, which it is drunkeness that is the sin. Oh man. I don't have the energy to expand. All this marijuana talk has made lethargic. I'm ordeing a pizza to go with my Belgium beer. NOTE: I am not talking about civil, but rather moral law. b/c there is a good case for civil legalizarion, though I would not support legalizarion of marijuana.
I have a feeling that with legalized marijuana, we'd find very quickly a huge variety of 'strengths'. Just like we have high proof liquor and very low proof beer... you can drink anything from 1% to 99.6% ABV alcohol. Only alcoholics will sit down and drink hard liquor the same way they'd drink beer. I think it's reasonable to assume that the same can be true for marijuana. As it stands, there's no economic incentive for 'weaker' marijuana, because most people smoke it just to get high. This would no longer be the case if it was not illegal. Edited January 28, 2011 by Nihil Obstat

Except that I wouldn't take marijuana because it's taken in a smoke form, and I think it smells pretty gross too.
