Socrates
Starting a false religion contrary to the truth taught by Christ and His Church is indeed objectively grave matter worthy of hell. What the ultimate state of Joesph's Smith's (or anybody else's) soul is not ours to judge, but God's. Smith was either a liar/fraud or delusional/insane, or some combination of the two. And I'll say the same thing of the false prophet Mohammed and his false religion of Islam, and all other false prophets. Whether they were deliberately deceptive or insane, they are false prophets, and the religions they founded false religions, and we should try as best we can to convert those who follow them today. Of course, there isn't much of a problem with Mormon suicide bombers and such, but that's another topic of discussion.
