Apparently my cousin had her parents in the delivery room with her. And I guess my aunt couldn't imagine NOT being there, and my uncle thought it was kind freaky. I vote for the kind of freaky, and luckily, my parents agree!
[/quote]

We had a friend who thought he was going to be waiting right out there in the hallway when we had our first. I said, "Uh, no you're not. We'll call you."

I lived with my mom when we had our 3rd and I still didn't want here there. Some things... just... no. I don't care if she changed my diapers, she doesn't need to watch me deliver a baby. I don't think she intended to be there unless Matt wasn't there, but it still would have been a little beyond my comfort zone.

I don't think that a comment regarding the depths of dUSt's pockets would be considered racist at all.

That's amesome. :) We had big gatherings for graduation parties, too, and always had our cousins and aunts/uncles for birthdays. I just haven't known any that gathered for births like that. On the one hand I think it's neat, but on the other I would send my family away. I am a very private person and I don't want anyone there (while I am laboring) but my husband until I'm ready for them. lol

I love you for this! It kind of breaks my mother's heart a little that I wouldn't want her there for the birth of our children. I don't want anyone but my husband there, and back in the days where marriage/family weren't on my mind, I definitely felt the same way. I had to think long and hard about what I would do if Nic didn't make it back from deployment in time and our second child came early, and I still don't know if I'd let my mother in the room, regardless of how helpful I know she'd be.

Sounds like your average family, lol. My neice had her baby and there were over a hundred of our family there, the nurse asked us to hold it down, everyone was talking low but a hundred people together got loud enough even for a big hospital waiting room, I said we are a big family sorry for the noise, the nurse said forgive me I know how you big italian families are ! I replied we are Irish, all of us ! The nurse said Irish? I thought at first you were light skinned spanish but then I figured Italian from the dark hair, then my other neice and nephew walked in, both with red hair and she said oh I can see the irish now! Stereotypes, you gotta love em'.

Except for the gathering during labour, that sounds great.

Same here. I was kinda relieved that I went into labour with Kieran 2 days before my parents arrived, so I didn't have to worry about kicking them out of the room. My dad was a bit dissapointed, since he'd wanted to drive me to the hospital. My mother was really nervous about the home birth, so I didn't really have to worry about her wanting to be there for that one. A friend offered to be a doula for me, but I didn't even want that, really, unless I'd had to go into hospital, so that Bart could stay with Kieran. Yeah, when it comes to labour and birth, I only want my husband and the midwives, and my husband doesn't have to be in the room with me (he wasn't for the majority of my labour with Charlotte, wasn't even in there for the birth). A friend of mine had lots of people in with her with her first, by her choice. Not my style, but OK.

Black music is some of the best.

Just the opening I needed!

I'd like to start off with some Mississippi Delta Blues. I know that's a bit obscure, but I grew up with it, listening to my Dad's old records, and so....that's where I'm starting this party ;). Feel free to expand to other genres.

And two songs I remember very well from my childhood :)

The first I can remember my parents dancing to in my grandfather's basement.

Mississippi John Hurt - Salty Dog

The second you might recognize from Obama's inauguration. Rev. Lowry paraphrased bits of it in his blessing, and as soon as he did, I said to myself, "I know where he got that from!" :)
