IcePrincessKRS
oh, i agree with you on the benefits of frequent confession. i'm just saying confessors don't always see it that way and some consider it to be scrupulous.
Yeah, I was once told my sins were not sins and that they were things people struggle with every day. I left confession feeling ripped off. I don't think I struggle with scruples, but I know it's a real thing and I think many of us who don't have to deal with it don't really understand how bad it can be for the scrupulous soul. I would venture to say that we often even take our "spiritual ease" for granted. I am aware of my sins and faults, but only rarely do I lay in bed at night and think "Holy croutons, I'm gonna go to hell. I'm a horrible person." But I don't think that that is actually scruples. Tantum Ergo
Scrupulosity is not the normal feeling of guilt one has after committing a sin. It is a terrible feeling of anxiety one has after committing a sin. It also can lead one to believe he has committed sin where there was none, or to anxiously question whether he has committed sin, and if so, how serious. Overall, it is an unhealthy preoccupation with sin. It robs you of your peace. I read a story about scrupulous man who came to Padre Pio for confession. The man confessed his sin, terribly upset, and told Padre Pio how torn and sorry he was over it. Padre Pio sent the man away, telling him that what he felt was not based in true contrition, but pride. Padre Pio said that the way you could tell that something was of God was whether it brought you peace. True contrition brings peace to your soul. Scrupulosity tears you up.
