BG45
He wasn't JP2 at the time, but when he was a Cardinal he was skiing and accidentally crossed the border and was detained by Soviet authorities. When asked who he was, he said that he was the Cardinal-Archbishop of Krakow; the guard snarkily replied that if he was the Cardinal Archbishop of Krakow, then he was the Pope. Cardinal Wojtyła was released about an hour later when very angry Soviet officials told the border guards to let him go.
Laudate_Dominum
I was going to say Pope John XII was cool because he was still a teenager when elected Pope, but then I recalled that he is said to have turned the Lateran basilica into a whorehouse, so meh. A bit disedifying and surely uncool. I tend to picture a young Cheech in the chair a Peter and it kind of freaks me out to say the least... Luigi
Pius V was the first Dominican pope. He wore his Dominican whites throughout his papacy, and that's why popes to this very day dress in white. Maybe not all that cool, but at least interesting - papal trivia. Karol Wojtyla, the parish priest)?? Edited January 22, 2011 by Tally Marx
Ed Normile
You look like a nun, to me.
Thanks for the diet sprite shooting out the nose moment! I read that while taking a big swig, and yes I have to agree I sorta look like Mother Angelica, at least in silhouette. ed Edited January 23, 2011 by Ed Normile

Norseman82
One of the stories told about Pope John Paul II by boyhood friends was that he had a permanent scar on his nose (or somewhere else on his face) from being hit by a hockey puck when he was playing goalie when he was growing up.
