Prayer Talk

Recommended Posts

I've been blessed with the opportunity to talk to my youth group next Saturday about prayer. Broad topic, I know.

I was planning to focus on consolation/desolation, but I know there are other things out there that might be really valuable too. Any and all suggestions are welcome! I'd also like to keep it interesting so I can hold their attention, which tends to be a problem.

Soooo post your ideas in 3...2...1...GO!

how long does the talk have to be?
I'm not sure... I'd say half an hour, maybe more.

Maybe just a quick overview of different types of prayer. Like Lectio Divina, mental prayer, the Rosary, Divine Office, etc. Or the history of prayer in Christianity. Look in the CCC under the section for prayer, and you'll find a lot of info!

(scroll down to Part Four - you might want to focus just on one "chapter" or "article")

I'm not sure how much you can teach teenagers about desolation. Isn't that kind of where teenagers spend a lot of their time?

in my experience, i would advise against this. pick ONE type of prayer and stress that. or stress praying, just actually praying. teach them the 5 minute prayer (can't remember the speaker who talked about this).

First minute: pray for others and their needs
Second minute: pray for the world
Third minute: pray for yourself and your needs
Fourth & Fifth minutes: shut up and listen.

(I know I'm not getting that right, but I'm lazy right now and don't wanna go find the durned thing.)

for teenagers, this type of prayer won't overwhelm them or intimidate them. if you were doing a retreat, and doing multiple sessions on prayer, then each time you could go deeper and deeper.

the other suggestion is to talk about the prayer you are most passionate about - because your passion for it will shine through and that will get them interested in what you are talking about.

What Red said, what you're most passionate about! With me I'd probably talk a lot on Lectio Divina and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. I think it's important to stress, whatever you do, that prayer is a conversation and not a wishlist. :)

good point. even if the prayer thing you wrote isn't exactly right, it still works. Thank you!

Glad to hear you were going to hit it already! And awesome confirmation name, have you read her diary?
No I haven't. Not yet, at least. It's on my very, very long list.
